LEND Leadership Training

MMI’s Interdisciplinary Leadership Education (LEND) Certificate program improves the health of children and youth with disabilities, including Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASDs), by preparing future professionals to assume leadership roles within their field and to provide interdisciplinary care in a culturally competent and family centered manner.

Education LEND Traineeship

The MMI-LEND program is part of a national network of leadership training programs funded by the Maternal and Child Health Bureau to develop 12 areas of leadership competency in those students and practicing professionals who serve children and youth with special health care needs and/or developmental disabilities.

Students completing a graduate or postdoctoral degree from over 13 different disciplines are eligible for this leadership training experience:

Graduate or post-doctoral students from other disciplines (e.g. Law, Political Science, etc.) who are planning for career working with individuals with special health care needs or disabilities can also be considered for this internship opportunity.

All Leadership trainees will also receive training specific to the screening, diagnosis, treatment or research of Autism Spectrum Disorders as part of the MMI-LEND Autism Leadership Academy.

Graduate Leadership Traineeships

Students pursuing an advanced degree can complete an internship in their home discipline while receiving interdisciplinary practicum, didactic, and project related activities to develop their leadership potential. Most of the 10-month traineeships are 20 hours per week and students receive an $11,000 stipend. Psychology students complete a 40-hour per week internship with an additional stipend supplement from their home department.

Post Doctoral Traineeships

Postdoctoral scholars have received their terminal degree (e.g., Ph.D., M.D., DPT or OTD) and are pursuing further training. MMI offers postdoctoral traineeships in Leadership in Education in Neurodevelopmental Disabilities (LEND) for individuals with terminal degrees in Audiology, Education and Child Development (General or Special Education), Genetic Counseling, Health Administration, Medicine, Nursing, Occupational Therapy, Physical Therapy, Psychology, Public Health, Nutrition, Social Work, or Speech & Language Pathology. Additional post-doctoral trainees may also be approved in other areas such as Health Information Technology, Law, Public Policy, or for family members.

The initial appointment is for one year, with possible reappointment for an additional one-year term.

Recruitment Process

Recruitment begins in January. Applicants should contact their home discipline or department director prior to submitting a LEND Post-Doc application in order to match applicant interests with their home department’s mission, goals, and objectives. After approval by their home discipline, the applicant can be nominated for the MMI-LEND Post-doctoral traineeship. The MMI-LEND Post-doctoral traineeship application packet should include a letter of interest stating specific goals and objectives, a curriculum vitae, official transcript, three letters of recommendation, and a Home Discipline Recommendation form signed by the MMI department/discipline that is sponsoring the applicant. When this complete packet is received, the applicants will be interviewed by a small group of interdisciplinary education team members. The number of positions offered is determined by the amount of financial support. The process is typically finalized by March 30th for traineeships that commence on July 1 of that year.
