Committee Selection for Ph.D. Students

As per the Ph.D. Students Timeline, the student, after consultation with their mentor/supervisor, shall enter their Supervisory Committee Members into Seguidor.      

  1. The Supervisory Committee shall be composed of at least four Graduate Faculty members from the area of the student’s research interest.   Once entered, the Supervisory Committee will be approved by the student’s MSIA sub-plan representative, one of the MSIA Co-Chairs, and the Dean of Graduate Studies. 
  2. The Supervisory Committee shall approve a formal Program of Studies.
  3. The Supervisory Committee shall meet at least every six months to review the student’s progress in courses, research and professional development.  A copy of the meeting minutes shall be uploaded by the student into Seguidor.
  4. Prior to the end of the first year of the student’s program, the student shall prepare the Individual Development Plan (IDP) and meet with their Supervisory Committee to approve their dissertation research topic.  This should be documented in the students meeting minutes.  The IDP may be the myIDP listed on the Ph.D. Degree Timeline or an IDP approved by the students sub-plan area.
  5. Students are also required to submit an Annual Report to be updated yearly and uploaded into Seguidor.  Students are encouraged to share and discuss this report with their Supervisory Committee.  The initial components of a graduate student’s Annual Report should be developed at the time of the first Supervisory Committee meeting.  The template is available in Seguidor.
  6. The Supervisory Committee for Ph.D. degree students has the following principal responsibilities:
    1. Assist the student in developing a program of studies.
    2. Approve the topical area for dissertation research.
    3. Advise the student regarding research direction and dissertation preparation.
    4. Administer the comprehensive examination.
    5. Serve as the Examination Committee for the final oral examination. (i.e., dissertation defense)
