We value all members of the care team each playing an important part in caring for and with all individuals with MS. We strive to promote social justice in caring for our patients by identifying and eliminating barriers.

Program Overview:
The Multiple Sclerosis Program at the University of Nebraska Medical Center (UNMC) focuses on the diagnosis and treatment of multiple sclerosis (MS) and related neuroimmunological disorders. Areas of special expertise include multiple sclerosis, neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorders (NMOSD), transverse myelitis (TM), myelin oligodendrocyte glycoprotein (MOG) antibody disease, and other antibody-mediated demyelinating diseases, autoimmune encephalitis, acute disseminated encephalomyelitis (ADEM), and neurological complications of systemic disorders such as connective tissue diseases, sarcoidosis, vasculitis and cancer. Our expert team see both pediatric and adult individuals across the age spectrum.

Because the needs of people with MS are different depending on the symptoms, services including: Neuro-Opthalmology, Neuroradiology, Neuropsychology, Neurosurgery, Occupational and Physical therapy, Physiatry, Speech Therapy, Dietary Consultation, Neuropsychology, Psychiatry, Pain Management, and Urogynecology are available providing comprehensive, state-of-the-art, multidisciplinary care for people with MS and related disorders.

In collaboration with the Dystonia and Spasticity Clinic at UNMC, we provide a full complement of treatments for spasticity, including Botulinum toxin injections and intrathecal baclofen pump therapy. We also have a state-of-the-art infusion center with specialty trained nurses in infusion therapies for MS.

We understand that once the diagnosis of MS is confirmed it can be somewhat overwhelming initially, but in general, with appropriate treatment and follow up, people with MS typically are able to lead full productive lives. Because of the numerous treatment options and fairly intensive initial follow-up care, a Nurse Case Manager in collaboration with your provider will be by assigned to provide additional education and coordination of care. In an attempt to shorten any delays in accessing MS specialty care and receiving treatment, we have recently launched a Relapse Clinic dedicated to urgent evaluation of patients with symptoms suggesting MS relapse.

Symptoms and disease course in MS can be highly variable. While some individuals have relatively few problems throughout their life, a minority of people with MS have significant disability associated with their disease. Our team understands the challenges of disability and the effect on the individual and family members. Accessing the numerous resources and medical providers and navigating a complex health care system can be daunting. Getting to the clinic can be at best difficult for patients with advanced disability. Unique to our program, we offer extended visit times in our Transdisciplinary Clinic with intensive follow up and coordination. In addition, we offer telemedicine and tele education services for more effective care delivery and in some cases a house call service called Multiple Sclerosis At Home Service (MAHA).

As an academic center we value research and evidence-based medicine. We are involved in numerous research studies at any one time including investigator-initiated and industry-sponsored trials. All patients are offered the opportunity to be enrolled in a database so that they can be notified if they may qualify to participate in a clinical trial.

Continuing education of medical students, residents, fellows, nursing and physician assistant students is critical to our mission and trainees are a vibrant part of routine care. To obtain more information about our Neuroimmunology/MS fellowship program, please visit our fellowship webpage.

Continuity is key in establishing excellent relationships between patients and providers across the continuum of care from the day of the first visit throughout the course of the disease. At the UNMC MS Center, you will work with a primary MS provider who will get to know you and your specific needs. In addition, we have recently launched a series of educational seminars targeted at people with MS and their care givers to empower them with the knowledge required to actively participate in disease management.

Our program is the only multidisciplinary center recognized by the National Multiple Sclerosis Society and the Consortium of Multiple Sclerosis Centers in the state of Nebraska. Our team has received international recognition for its Transdisciplinary Clinic, and the MAHA program.
