Deborah Trautman, Ph.D., president and CEO of the American Association of Colleges of Nursing, gave the keynote presentation on future trends in nursing. She noted the critical nature of nursing's contributions as a knowledge profession and said the importance of nurses' assessment, clinical reasoning, decision making, and help with behavior change are all likely to become increasingly central to the trust they have with the public.
The Distinguished Alumnus Award was presented to Mary Sullivan, Ph.D., and Douglass Haas received the Nursing Excellence Award. The inaugural UNMC College of Nursing Hall of Fame awards were presented to Kathryn Barnard, Ph.D., Susan Hassmiller, Ph.D., Beatrice Kalisch, Ph.D., Joan Lappe, Ph.D., retired Maj Gen. Kimberly Siniscalchi, Gladys Sorensen, Ed.D., and Carol Wilson.
"The gala was spectacular," said Juliann Sebastian, Ph.D., dean of the UNMC College of Nursing. "What a contribution to the future to be able to celebrate the past, reflect on the present, and catalyze our energies for the future. We thank all those present who could celebrate with us and those who were there in spirit."
