Student spotlight – Kayli Bendlin

Education is one of the four pillars of UNMC’s mission and our students are the lifeblood of that aspect of campus life.

In UNMC Today’s Student Spotlight, we get to know some of these students, who will become tomorrow’s health care professionals.

Today we meet Kayli Bendlin, third-year student in the College of Pharmacy.

  • Name: Kayli Bendlin
  • Hometown: Omaha
  • Year/program: P3, College of Pharmacy

What is your best memory from your time at UNMC?

My best memory of my time at UNMC is meeting and marrying my husband, Andrew Bendlin — is a P4 pharmacy student. We met at a pharmacy school party prior to my first year. We are very opposite, I am very focused and scheduled, and Andy is much more laid back. He has helped to appreciate the need to take time for friends, family and myself. He has taught me to never take myself too seriously and he supports me in everything I do.

Our four brand values are leadership, commitment to excellence, working together and being a trusted resource. Pick one and tell us a time you witnessed it embodied at UNMC.

Commitment to excellence. Recently, we participated in an organ transplant lab session in which we followed patients in the hospital. The disease states that we had learned about in books became real, and we were able to see how the decisions that we made would have an impact on this individual’s overall outcome. Although we were nervous for this experience, our professors pushed us to step outside of our comfort zone and put our skills and knowledge to work in the real world.

List three things people may not know about you.

  • I used to be a high school chemistry teacher in Oklahoma and at Millard South.
  • My family has a long legacy at UNMC. My mom (Cindy Tajchman Hall), my two aunts (Mary Tajchman Gurney and Patti Tajchman Ronconi) and my uncle (Jud Gurney, M.D.) all went here and my cousin Annie Gurney was just accepted to medical school.
  • I make great kolaches. I make them for my family at Christmas time every year.

Kayli is such a caring, kind-hearted, and dedicated person (she wasn't kidding when she said she was focused). It has been a real joy to get to know her.

Congratulations to Kayli for being named to the (APhA-ASP) policy standing committee! Only four students nationwide are asked to serve each year! Great job, Kayli! And great answer for the question about your best memory!
