[AUDIO LOGO] SARA MAY: Your options around penicillin allergy actually vary a little bit based on your clinical history. For kids with penicillin allergy, that's actually usually amoxicillin allergy. And the literature has been very clear that most rashes associated with amoxicillin are not due to amoxicillin allergy, but due to being on the drug with a viral illness at the same time. So the drug with a viral illness leads to a rash. In that case, usually what we recommend is doing a challenge. And what that looks like is the kid comes to the doctor's office-- it could be either their pediatrician if they feel comfortable or to an allergist-- and we give a dose or two doses in the clinic and watch to make sure a rash doesn't develop. This is recommended because amoxicillin is the best drug to treat multiple infections that kids typically get. This leads to better treatment of the infection, but also reducing the use of other antibiotics that may not be as effective or have more side effects or risk developing multidrug-resistant infections.
