{"id":100642,"date":"2023-06-26T02:00:00","date_gmt":"2023-06-26T07:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/newsroom\/?p=100642"},"modified":"2023-06-23T15:46:48","modified_gmt":"2023-06-23T20:46:48","slug":"human-dna-lab-to-continue-law-enforcement-collaboration","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/newsroom\/2023\/06\/26\/human-dna-lab-to-continue-law-enforcement-collaboration\/","title":{"rendered":"Human DNA lab extends law enforcement collaboration"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"panel body-content\"><div class=\"panel__container\">\n<p>The UNMC Human DNA Lab and the Nebraska State Patrol Crime Lab will continue to collaborate to provide DNA profiles to the Combined DNA Index System following the University of Nebraska Board of Regents\u2019 approval on June 21 of an agreement between the two labs.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignright size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/newsroom\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/JesseCox062623.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-100695\" width=\"249\" height=\"403\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/newsroom\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/JesseCox062623.jpg 467w, https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/newsroom\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/JesseCox062623-185x300.jpg 185w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 249px) 100vw, 249px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Jesse Cox, MD, PhD<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>The Combined DNA Index System is a law enforcement tool that is run by the Federal Bureau of Investigation and accessible only to state labs. Under the agreement, UNMC\u2019s Human DNA Lab will generate DNA profiles as requested by the NSPCL. After the NSPCL reviews the data and agrees with the interpretation, the data will be loaded to the DNA profile if it fits the qualifications for the CODIS system.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The agreement will be in effect from July 1 of this year to June 30, 2026. It is the continuation of a memorandum of understanding the two labs have had in place since 2009.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cOur outstanding molecular forensics team at the UNMC Human DNA Identification Laboratory \u2013 led by Dr. Jesse Cox \u2013 takes pride in supporting law enforcement efforts across the state,\u201d said Joseph Khoury, MD, Stokes-Shackelford Professor and Chair, UNMC Department of Pathology and Microbiology.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe success of this longstanding partnership is a reflection of the trust between the teams and our ability to work together to solve problems using
