Ashley Wysong, MD, professor and chair of the UNMC Department of Dermatology, recently was published in the New England Journal of Medicine, one of the country\u2019s most prestigious medical journals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Her review article, \u201cSquamous-Cell Carcinoma of the Skin,\u201d<\/a> was published on June 15.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“It has been an honor and an absolute pleasure to author a review article highlighting squamous-cell skin cancer for the New England Journal of Medicine,\u201d Dr. Wysong said. \u201cAs a clinician-scientist, I have centered my clinical and research focus on identifying novel clinical, pathologic and genetic risk factors that predict metastasis and poor outcomes in squamous cell carcinoma and other skin cancers.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

While the majority of skin cancers can be treated in an outpatient dermatology office under local anesthesia, Dr. Wysong said high-risk squamous cell carcinoma can become life-threatening and requires multidisciplinary care in specialty centers at UNMC, Nebraska Medicine and the Fred & Pamela Buffett Cancer Center.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI am very proud to increase awareness of the potential seriousness of skin cancer in the larger medical community,\u201d she said, \u201cand to share the most up-to-date information about diagnosing, staging and treating squamous cell carcinoma.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dr. Wysong has been the UNMC Department of Dermatology founding chair since 2018. She is an accomplished leader, a nationally recognized Mohs micrographic surgeon, a respected skin cancer researcher and a dedicated educator and mentor. Dr. Wysong noted that squamous-cell carcinoma is one of the most common cancers in humans, outnumbering the top five reportable cancers treated in the United States combined (breast, lung, prostate, colorectal and melanoma). Most cases are localized and treatable; the small percentage that recur or spread can be fatal, and immunocompromised patients are at dramatically increased risk.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cDr. Wysong\u2019s selection by the New England Journal of Medicine to create this review and the quality of the work is a testament to Dr. Wysong\u2019s knowledge of the field and the importance of skin cancers to people throughout the world,\u201d said Bradley Britigan, MD, dean of the UNMC College of Medicine. \u201cDr. Wysong and the outstanding group of dermatologists that have joined the UNMC Department of Dermatology since its creation only a few years ago have, in partnership with Nebraska Medicine, Children\u2019s Hospital and the VA, markedly enhanced the knowledge and expertise in skin diseases available to the citizens of Nebraska and surrounding areas.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
