A finalist in UNMC\u2019s search for the new director of the Fred & Pamela Buffett Cancer Center and the Eppley Institute for Research in Cancer and Allied Diseases will be on campus Monday, July 31.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Faculty, staff and students are invited to hear from Raymond Bergan, MD, deputy director of the Fred & Pamela Buffett Cancer Center, professor in the Eppley Institute and Bill Bures and Jerry Pabst Chair in Cancer Research at UNMC, during an open campus forum Monday. The forum will be from noon to 12:45 p.m. in in the Fred & Pamela Buffett Cancer Center, Room 0.12101, and also will be available via Zoom. Attendees can access the Zoom link via this intranet page<\/a> and ask questions during the forum.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A physician\/scientist, Dr. Bergan is an internationally regarded cancer researcher known both for leading breakthrough studies on how cancer cells spread and developing preventive treatments for high-risk patients. After completing fellowships in medical oncology and drug discovery at the National Cancer Institute, Dr. Bergan joined Northwestern University, serving as the director of experimental therapeutics and leader of the prevention program for the Lurie Comprehensive Cancer Center. He founded and directed one of only five NCI-funded Early Phase Cancer Chemoprevention Programs, expanding it to 19 leading research institutions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

While at Oregon Health & Science University, Dr. Bergan served as chief of the division of hematology\/oncology, associate director of the Knight Cancer Institute and co-lead of the Translational Oncology Program. He expanded the division by more than 50% to 103 faculty, increasing therapeutic trials accrual by 50%. He joined UNMC in 2020.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

During each campus visit, candidates will meet with campus and community stakeholders, as well as participate in an open campus presentation, in which they will make an introduction to the UNMC community, share their vision for the cancer center and institute and answer questions from participants. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The candidate selected will succeed Ken Cowan, MD, PhD, who will step down from his roles but remain a full-time faculty member and continue to see patients. Dr. Cowan joined the medical center in 1999 and, in 2021, led the Fred & Pamela Buffett Cancer Center to a successful renewal of its National Cancer Institute Cancer Center Support Grant.<\/p>\n<\/a><\/div><\/div>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
