Dr. Mathiasen will lead a new initiative that will see Nebraska Medicine physicians providing care to Nebraska Athletics\u2019 student-athletes. Nebraska Medicine\u2019s physicians will provide both clinic staffing and event coverage as a part of the new agreement.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe goal of this partnership is to utilize all the medical resources and expertise available to provide the best and most convenient care for our student-athletes,\u201d said Trev Alberts, director of Husker Athletics. \u201cHaving Nebraska Medicine, the clinical partner of UNMC, working in this role will give our student-athletes access to providers who will be able to do just that.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Dr. Mathiasen has been with Nebraska Medicine and UNMC for a little more than eight years. He received his undergraduate degree from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln and graduated from medical school at UNMC. He completed his emergency medicine residency and sports medicine fellowship at the University of Iowa. He currently serves as chair of the American College of Emergency Physicians Sports Medicine Section and chair of the NSAA Sports Medicine Advisory Committee. He also is tournament physician for the NCAA Men&#8217;s College World Series and has previously served as a physician for U.S. Ski &amp; Snowboard. Additionally, he has provided medical care to a number of local high schools.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThere is a rich history of sports medicine at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, and I am honored to be able to continue to build upon the prior success,\u201d Dr. Mathiasen said. \u201cIn addition to providing excellent care to the student-athletes, the addition of Nebraska Medicine resources allows for innovation and growth opportunities within Sports Medicine to reach the goal of being the model sports medicine program in the country.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Dr. Mathiasen will continue to serve in his roles with Nebraska Medicine and UNMC, however, in a reduced capacity.
