While a new school year brings excitement, it also can bring its fair share of challenges. As we take on another semester, the MMI Psychology Department has some helpful tips for families to make the most of this school year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Establish a good daily routine. Kids \u2014 and adults \u2014 do best when they have some predictability and consistency in their day. Creating routines can help reduce stress and ensure enough time is built into the week for everything that needs to get done. A good routine starts and ends with eating and sleeping enough for kids to fuel their bodies to be at their best.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Plan ahead and stick with it. Set alarms and prepare meals in advance. Make sure bags are packed each night before going to bed.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Build in down time. Overscheduling activities is fairly common these days, and it certainly takes a toll on kids and parents alike. Carve out time to play, relax and simply be with friends and family. These activities can go a long way in fueling emotional reserves and elevating one\u2019s mood. At times, this might mean skipping a practice so kids have some time to rest.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Check in with each other. Talk to your kids about their day and let them know you are interested in how they are doing. Make time to get to know their friends. Check in on their schoolwork and offer help with planning for homework, big assignments or tests.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If you notice your child is getting anxious or beginning to dislike school, let them know you are there to support them. If those feelings persist for more than a couple weeks or or if you notice other changes in their mood or behavior, like struggling to keep up with schoolwork, reach out to their teacher or school counselor to see how they are doing. You can also reach out to your child\u2019s pediatrician for help or for a referral to behavioral health.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>We are here to offer our support in making this school year a success.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>While a new school year brings excitement, it also can bring its fair share of challenges.
