The McGoogan Health Sciences Library continually acquires new items to build the special collections and archives. The library relies on book donations from the campus and community, but there also are donor funds for purchasing rare books.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

One of the most prolific areas of collection for McGoogan Library is in midwifery and obstetrics, and the books range from the Middle Ages to the late Victorian era.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On Oct. 4 from 11 a.m.-1 p.m., the campus community is invited to visit Level 8 of the library to tour the rare book room with Erin Torell, rare books librarian. Visitors will see and learn about medicine’s evolution of understanding around the nature and science of birth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Be among the first to see the newest addition to the collection, “Theoretical and Practical Instructions for the Use of Students,” by Marguerite Guillomance Coutanceau. This is one of two existing copies of this 19th century French midwifery instruction book on the best practices of birth for the time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A virtual session will be held on Oct. 5 from noon-1 p.m. Using document cameras, attendees will get up close with the books as if being in the room with them. The public is welcome to attend. Zoom registration<\/a> is required.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
