Traditional parenting practices of the Lakota Sioux are the focus of a Sept. 26 presentation by Grace Johnson, a tribal and mental health consultant and founder of Red Nation Healing Counseling and Consulting. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cPrevention Begins Before Birth\u201d begins at noon in room 2010 of the Sorrell Center.\u00a0A virtual option is available at this link<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cTraditional Native American child rearing practices beautifully align with early childhood development of infants and toddlers that created strong bonds with the parents, enhanced cognitive abilities and provide protective emotional factors for the child,\u201d Johnson said. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThese practices were almost completely destroyed during colonization and the devastating effects of the boarding schools on Native families,\u201d she said.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Today, tribes are reclaiming these practices and encouraging families to embrace the wisdom of their ancestors, Johnson said. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
