UNMC played host to the University of Nebraska Board of Regents on Oct. 4-5, ahead of the Board of Regents meeting that was held Oct. 5 in the Wigton Heritage Center on UNMC\u2019s Omaha campus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On Wednesday, Oct. 4, the regents heard presentations from UNMC Chancellor Jeffrey P. Gold, MD, and other UNMC leaders, including Student Regent and Student Senate President Katie Schultis. The group then traveled to the Munroe-Meyer Institute for dinner and a tour of the building. This included a special presentation featuring Sydney Norton, a speech-language pathologist providing therapy in MMI\u2019s Hastings, Nebraska, speech clinic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On Thursday, Oct. 5, the board held its regularly scheduled meeting in the Wigton Heritage Center atrium. The first part of the meeting featured several UNMC topics, presented by Student Regent Schultis and several leaders of innovative programs and centers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Board chair Tim Clare said he always enjoys the chance to visit University of Nebraska campuses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cYou have the opportunity to see firsthand what\u2019s going on in the schools, in the classrooms, in the different colleges and campuses,\u201d he said. \u201cIt\u2019s important to see the energy and vibrancy in the various campuses, because it\u2019s contagious, it\u2019s exciting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cFirst, our students are one of our highest priorities, in terms of the educational they are receiving in the classroom, and the practical applications of that. Secondly, it\u2019s important for us to see how the university is benefiting our state.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Clare said he was excited to hear about UNMC\u2019s efforts, including its work to address health care needs throughout the entire state of Nebraska.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dr. Gold thanked the UNMC leaders who presented to the regents.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIt was wonderful to be able to welcome the regents to Omaha and to highlight for them UNMC\u2019s accomplishments and goals in areas such as rural health, building the health professions workforce, protecting our nation and other efforts,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cMy congratulations and thanks to the many members of the UNMC community who helped us showcase UNMC to the regents and other visitors who attended Thursday\u2019s meeting.
