Growth at the med center\u2019s main Omaha campus and growth across UNMC\u2019s 500-mile campus. Growth in student enrollment. Growth in research. In March, the NU Foundation also held its first ever <a href=\"https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/newsroom\/2023\/04\/03\/first-ever-unmc-giving-day-draws-1542-gifts-from-generous-donors\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">UNMC Giving Day<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Research wins and gains<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>UNMC&#8217;s research enterprise also reached new heights.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-wp-embed is-provider-newsroom wp-block-embed-newsroom\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"7c1UDpdNpW\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/newsroom\/2023\/10\/05\/unmcs-research-awards-expenditures-grew-in-fy23\/\">UNMC\u2019s research awards, expenditures grew in FY23<\/a><\/blockquote><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-embedded-content\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts\" security=\"restricted\" style=\"position: absolute; clip: rect(1px, 1px, 1px, 1px);\" title=\"&#8220;UNMC\u2019s research awards, expenditures grew in FY23&#8221; &#8212; Newsroom\" src=\"https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/newsroom\/2023\/10\/05\/unmcs-research-awards-expenditures-grew-in-fy23\/embed\/#?secret=1lbLK0BVrb#?secret=7c1UDpdNpW\" data-secret=\"7c1UDpdNpW\" width=\"500\" height=\"282\" frameborder=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Among the notable research accomplishments was Rebekah Gundry, PhD, receiving a federal COBRE grant worth $11.8 million for UNMC\u2019s Center for Heart and Vascular Research. UNMC now has three funded NIH Center of Biomedical Research Excellence grants, including the Cognitive Neuroscience of Development &amp; Aging Center. Watch for more information on Dr. Gundry\u2019s grant in an upcoming UNMC Today.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And UNMC researchers published a significant advance in Alzheimer&#8217;s research, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/newsroom\/2023\/12\/27\/attenuation-of-signs-and-symptoms-of-alzheimers-in-a-living-animal\/\">thanks to efforts from a team<\/a> led by Howard Gendelman, MD, head of the Carol J. Swarts Laboratory for Emerging Neuroscience, Margaret R. Larson Professor of Internal Medicine and Chair of the Department of Pharmacology and Experimental Neuroscience at UNMC.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In UNMC&#8217;s own research awards, a nurse was named Scientist Laureate for the first time \u2014 and award winner Michele Balas, PhD, reflected on the significance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-wp-embed is-provider-newsroom wp-block-embed-newsroom\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"7GVh4jribm\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/newsroom\/2023\/11\/09\/unmc-2023-scientist-laureate-michele-balas-phd\/\">UNMC 2023 Scientist Laureate: Michele Balas, PhD<\/a><\/blockquote><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-embedded-content\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts\" security=\"restricted\" style=\"position: absolute; clip: rect(1px, 1px, 1px, 1px);\" title=\"&#8220;UNMC 2023 Scientist Laureate: Michele Balas, PhD&#8221; &#8212; Newsroom\" src=\"https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/newsroom\/2023\/11\/09\/unmc-2023-scientist-laureate-michele-balas-phd\/embed\/#?secret=44V2nHGJfR#?secret=7GVh4jribm\" data-secret=\"7GVh4jribm\" width=\"500\" height=\"282\" frameborder=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>New leadership carries on the mission<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>UNMC welcomed a new dean of the College of Nursing: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/newsroom\/2023\/03\/15\/lepaine-sharp-mchenry-dnp-named-unmc-college-of-nursing-dean\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Dr. Sharp-McHenry announced as new nursing dean<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And a new dean of the UNMC College of Dentistry: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/newsroom\/2023\/06\/21\/gerry-kugel-dmd-phd-named-unmc-college-of-dentistry-dean\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Gerry Kugel, DMD, PhD, named UNMC College of Dentistry dean<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And a new leader of the Fred &amp; Pamela Buffett Cancer Center: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/newsroom\/2023\/09\/19\/dr-joann-sweasy-expert-in-dna-repair-named-cancer-center-director\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Dr. Joann Sweasy, expert in DNA repair, named cancer center director<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It also elevated an interim leader to full-time dean: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/newsroom\/2023\/06\/06\/emily-glenn-named-mcgoogan-library-dean-at-unmc\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Emily Glenn named McGoogan Library dean at UNMC<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And an interim vice chancellor was named to the permanent role: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/newsroom\/2023\/12\/04\/dr-kratochvil-named-vice-chancellor-for-external-relations-2\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Dr. Kratochvil named vice chancellor for external relations<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Expanding rural outreach<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>UNMC expanded its commitment to rural health care throughout Nebraska with a groundbreaking project happening in partnership with the University of Nebraska at Kearney. Med center experts regularly hosted federal and defense guests for tours, including the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/newsroom\/2023\/11\/10\/unmc-welcomes-assistant-secretary-of-defense-for-tour\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">assistant secretary of defense for health affairs in October<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>UNMC researchers continued to work closely with the National Strategic Research Institute, the Department of Defense University Affiliated Research Center of U.S. Strategic Command and the University of Nebraska System. UNMC researchers, including Chancellor Gold, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/newsroom\/2023\/10\/24\/unmc-pioneers-combination-of-ai-simulations-and-extended-reality\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">published research combining AI<\/a> with the advanced 3-D imaging at the Davis Global Center and the expertise of Nebraska Medicine&#8217;s interventional cardiology clinical team.
