Seems like 2024 just started but already lots of things are happening. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

We had a leadership change in the Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology with Dr. Peter Mannon stepping down as chief to focus on his ongoing role as the Paustian Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) program. I am most grateful to Dr. Mannon for his hard work and accomplishments as division chief for the past four years. I am excited for the continued growth of the IBD Center and the collaboration with Nebraska Food for Health that Dr. Mannon has spearheaded. Dr. Fedja Rochling assumed the role of Division Chief on February 1. We are fortunate to have someone with his broad background and talents to lead the Division as it continues to grow in its academic and clinical mission.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Faculty in 2024 have already garnered special recognition. Dr. Amy Cannella and Dr. Elizabeth Harlow will be recognized with UNMC-wide Impact in Education Awards at the end of February. Two IM residents (Drs. Choi and Withrow) and one med-peds resident (Dr. Gallett) and two IM faculty (Dr. Cannella and Dr. Witt) were inducted into the UNMC Gold Humanism Honor Society. Check out the Awards and Honors section to see special recognition for Drs. Vose, Ashraf, and Brown-Keebler.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

About this time last year, we were mourning the passing of Dr. Diana Florescu from our infectious diseases division. Her impact as a clinical investigator, mentor, physician, colleague and friend are with us every day. The newsletter has a great picture of members of the Transplant ID group and Dr. Marius Florescu celebrating her life together over a meal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

February is Black History Month, and many special activities are offered on campus as well as in the community to help us all celebrate and learn more about the contributions of people of color to our country and the world. Drs. Marcelin and Fadul will be a part of a special presentation on February 27 at noon. Check out the newsletter for details and to RSVP to the hybrid event.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I saw a quote recently from Winston Churchill\u2014\u201d Courage is what it takes to stand up and speak. Courage is what it takes to sit down and listen\u201d. It struck me how important that is for us and our teams in the department. I appreciate both the speaking and listening that I see so frequently in the department.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
