The Child Health Research Institute, a partnership between UNMC and Children\u2019s Nebraska, opened applications for three grant opportunities on Feb. 1.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The CHRI Scholars Program grant is accepting applications, as are the CHRI Disparities Pilot Grants and the CHRI Artificial Intelligence (AI)\/Machine Learning (ML) Pilot Grants.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The final submission date for all three is April 15 at 5 p.m. Notice of grant awards will be June 30. CHRI membership<\/a> is required for all applicants.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The CHRI Scholars Program<\/a> is a competitive three-year program, funded by CHRI, to support newly appointed junior faculty physician-scientists with resources, training, protected time and mentorship. The program is expected to implement growth in the number of funded physician-scientists while increasing scientific productivity and promoting career development. Scholars will be provided with a total of $160,000 per year for three years, including salary for the scholar and funding for research expenses. All three previously named scholars have successfully used the benefits of the program to secure NIH funding.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The CHRI Disparities Pilot Grants<\/a> support the study of innovative strategies for identifying and reducing health disparities in children. Health disparity is defined per the Healthy People Initiative 2020: \u201cAlthough the term\u00a0disparities\u00a0is often interpreted to mean racial or ethnic disparities, many dimensions of disparity exist in the United States, particularly in health. If a health outcome is seen to a greater or lesser extent between populations, there is disparity. Race or ethnicity, sex, sexual identity, age, disability, socioeconomic status and geographic location all contribute to an individual\u2019s ability to achieve good health.\u201d This the third year that CHRI is offering the disparities pilot grants opportunity. CHRI anticipates giving out two $50,000 awards: one for general pediatric research and the other focused on pediatric cancer. A no-cost extension for a second year is possible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The CHRI Artificial Intelligence (AI)\/Machine Learning (ML) Pilot Grants<\/a> opportunity is new for 2024. Leveraging new resources to improve health outcomes in children is one of CHRI\u2019s primary goals. This RFA supports the use of AI\/ML in research to develop novel transformative strategies and computer automation to integrate, extract and interpret data, such as electronic health record data, socio-economic status, exposome, genome, epigenome, transcriptome, proteome, metabolome, microbiome and phenome, using data sets from pediatric and\/or perinatal cohorts. CHRI plans to award two $50,000 grants, one for general pediatric research and the other focused on pediatric cancer. A no-cost extension for a second year is possible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
