{"id":108010,"date":"2024-02-16T01:52:00","date_gmt":"2024-02-16T07:52:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/newsroom\/?p=108010"},"modified":"2024-02-19T08:55:48","modified_gmt":"2024-02-19T14:55:48","slug":"update-from-the-university-of-nebraska-nu-system-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/newsroom\/2024\/02\/16\/update-from-the-university-of-nebraska-nu-system-2\/","title":{"rendered":"Update from the University of Nebraska (NU) System"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"panel body-content\"><div class=\"panel__container\">\n<p><strong>From the Office of the President: Interim President Chris Kabourek testifies on legislative bills<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Interim President Chris Kabourek testified before the Legislature\u2019s Education Committee this week on three key bills impacting the University of Nebraska:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>LB1064,<\/strong>&nbsp;which would eliminate tenure at Nebraska\u2019s public higher education institutions.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" src=\"https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/newsroom\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/Chris-Kabourek2024-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-106810\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/newsroom\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/Chris-Kabourek2024-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/newsroom\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/Chris-Kabourek2024-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/newsroom\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/Chris-Kabourek2024-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/newsroom\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/Chris-Kabourek2024-1536x1024.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/newsroom\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/Chris-Kabourek2024-900x600.jpg 900w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Interim University of Nebraska President Chris Kabourek<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>In testifying in opposition to the bill, Kabourek said that while he wants to have rigorous annual review and post-tenure review processes to ensure all faculty and staff are held to high performance standards, eliminating tenure would hamstring the university\u2019s ability to recruit and retain top talent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cPut simply, eliminating tenure would tie both our hands behind our backs at the very time our university is setting high aspirations to compete with the best of the best,\u201d he told the committee. \u201cTenure is a crucial benefit for faculty who have put in years of work to earn it.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Kabourek noted that no other Big Ten university, nor any institution in the prestigious Association of American Universities that Nebraska aims to rejoin, is without tenure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cNebraska can\u2019t afford to become a club of one.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>LB1330,<\/strong>&nbsp;which would prohibit Nebraska\u2019s public higher education institutions from requiring certain programs, taking certain actions or spending state funds related to diversity, equity and inclusion.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The University of Nebraska opposes the bill on the grounds that constitutional authority to govern the university is vested in the Board of Regents.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Kabourek said that as president, his job is to listen to the voices of all students, faculty, staff and Nebraskans and work with the board to determine the university\u2019s path forward.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI think all Nebraskans are aligned around the idea that every single young person should be able to chase their dreams here,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>LB1388,<\/strong>&nbsp;which would match private fundraising with state funds for scholarships for the state\u2019s top ACT scorers.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The bill, introduced by Sen. Eliot Bostar of Lincoln, aims to help reverse Nebraska\u2019s brain drain and entice more top students to stay in Nebraska for college.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In testifying in support of the bill, Kabourek noted that it aligns with the University of Nebraska\u2019s new Presidential Scholars Program, announced last week in partnership with Gov. Jim Pillen. The program will provide full cost of attendance scholarships, plus stipends, to Nebraska students who score a perfect 36 on the ACT.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The university\u2019s goal is to raise private funds to expand the scholarship to students who score a 33 and above.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Kabourek said he\u2019s received an incredibly positive response from students and families since the new scholarship was announced. Currently the university loses 80% of students who score a 36.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI want to see us flip that ratio on its head and get 80% of Nebraska\u2019s 5-star students to stay right here in our great state,\u201d he said. \u201cTo do that, we absolutely have to get more competitive on scholarships. Nebraska\u2019s best and brightest have their choice of where to go to school, and we need to send a strong message that we want them here and we are not satisfied to be outcompeted for our own kids.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Following bill hearings, legislative committees decide whether to advance, amend and advance, or not advance a bill. Bills that advance to the full Legislature must pass three rounds of debate before they are sent to the governor\u2019s desk for
