{"id":108730,"date":"2024-03-04T16:10:07","date_gmt":"2024-03-04T22:10:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/newsroom\/?p=108730"},"modified":"2024-03-11T09:41:26","modified_gmt":"2024-03-11T14:41:26","slug":"walk-roll-celebrates-20-years","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/newsroom\/2024\/03\/04\/walk-roll-celebrates-20-years\/","title":{"rendered":"Walk &#038; Roll for Disabilities celebrates 20 years"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"panel body-content\"><div class=\"panel__container\">\n<p>The opening notes of Kool and The Gang\u2019s \u201cCelebration\u201d echoed through the top floor of Oak View Mall.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And the crowd of more than 400, gathered to cruise around the top floor of the mall the morning of March 3, had much to celebrate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Like the Walk &amp; Roll for Disabilities marking its 20th year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And a shared camaraderie and time to reconnect with old friends.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But top of the list is the funds raised to support adult recreation programming at the Munroe-Meyer Institute. The event, organized by the Meyer Foundation for Disabilities, helps to fund such programming at MMI, including cooking club, yoga club and other recreational programs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s a celebration of everyone coming together,\u201d said Nicole Giron, director of MMI\u2019s Department of Recreation Therapy. \u201cOur community partners come in and it\u2019s truly a group effort to provide these important life enrichment activities.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Walk &amp; Roll 2024\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/NQ9Jjx01vbs?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>This year\u2019s event brought in more than $42,000, said Mary McHale, board president of the Meyer Foundation for Disabilities. The Walk &amp; Roll has nearly doubled its number of participants and this year was on track to be the largest fundraising year in its 20-year history.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Seeing that growth \u2014 in the event and in the programming it supports \u2014 is gratifying, McHale said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When individuals with disabilities age out of the educational system at 21, there are fewer recreational activities available to them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>MMI&#8217;s programs &#8220;meet our adult children where they are,\u201d McHale said. \u201cThey\u2019re able to do fun things that you and I would have access to on a regular basis. Vendor booths set up around the corridor and clowns set up shop for face painting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>MMI Director Karoly Mirnics, MD, PhD, kicked things off with a message about tradition. \u201cI love to see the passion, and I love to hear the message you are sending to everyone,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Honorary advocates Chris Welshinger, Maddie Carlin and the Marley White family were recognized ahead of the walk.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Walkers and rollers took two laps around the mall, led by the Bellevue East Junior ROTC Color Guard. Members of the 501st Legion sprinkled in among participants.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>McHale said she\u2019s amazed with the event\u2019s growth and success. She credits the work of volunteers, committee members and community partners.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe future is to raise more money and have more programming,\u201d McHale said. \u201cYou and I have four or five choices on any given night to do things.
