Beth Blackburn, the first administrator for the UNMC IACUC since its formation in 1990, will retire from the med center March 15 after more than 35 years as an employee.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Blackburn joined UNMC\u2019s liver transplant program as an administrative assistant in 1987 before being recruited as administrator to the Office of Animal Care and Use and the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In 2007, she was honored with UNMC\u2019s Gold U Award from the University of Nebraska Board of Regents.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIt is unlikely that there is an IACUC protocol that has been approved at UNMC in the last 34-plus years that hasn\u2019t passed through her hands,\u201d said Manju George, MVSc, PhD, senior IACUC research analyst.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ernie Prentice, PhD, who was tasked with creating UNMC\u2019s IACUC, recruited Blackburn to her role.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dr. George said Blackburn was one of the first in the country to earn Certified Professional IACUC Administrator certification.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Blackburn\u2019s colleagues credited her with having a deep understanding of the processes, rules and regulations in the field.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Said Rebecca Bogatz, a fellow IACUC administrator, \u201cBeth was a great mentor to me and all who have worked with her. We will be sad to see her go and miss her vast knowledge of research regulations.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
