{"id":109325,"date":"2024-03-22T01:54:00","date_gmt":"2024-03-22T06:54:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/newsroom\/?p=109325"},"modified":"2024-03-21T17:12:34","modified_gmt":"2024-03-21T22:12:34","slug":"net-zero-waste-goals-met-for-employee-appreciation-day","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/newsroom\/2024\/03\/22\/net-zero-waste-goals-met-for-employee-appreciation-day\/","title":{"rendered":"Net zero waste goals met for Employee Appreciation Day"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"panel body-content\"><div class=\"panel__container\">\n<p>The UNMC Office of Sustainability held a successful zero-waste event at UNMC\u2019s Employee Appreciation Day, meaning that at least 90% of waste by weight was diverted from the landfill.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Waste station volunteers assisted attendees in placing their waste in the correct stream. They also educated and raised awareness about sustainability efforts on campus \u2013 especially those that contribute to the med center\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/dashboard.livegreennebraska.com\/materials\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">net zero waste<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/dashboard.livegreennebraska.com\/campus-engagement\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">engagement<\/a> goals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Of the 132 pounds of waste generated across the event\u2019s three locations, a total of 119 pounds was diverted from the landfill by sending it to compost, recycling or the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.firststarrecycling.com\/hefty-renew\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Hefty ReNew Program<\/a> that processes waste into new resources.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The breakdown of waste streams was:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Compost: 69 pounds<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Plates<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Napkins<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Leftover food<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Recycling: 41 pounds<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Water bottles<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Aluminum cans<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Plastic cups<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Hefty ReNew Bags: Nine pounds<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Chip bags<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Utensils<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Other soft plastics<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Landfill: An event that drew more than 500 UNMC employees generated only 13 pounds of trash.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Emily Wiley, an employee in the UNMC College of Allied Health Professions and a LiveGreen Ambassador, served as one of the volunteers at the event.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cHearing those numbers at the end of the day, and knowing that we did it with a small team, was such a huge accomplishment,\u201d Wiley said. \u201cI hope more LiveGreen Ambassador volunteers will join future events to keep our zero-waste streak going strong.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Anyone planning an event at UNMC can plan a zero-waste event.
