{"id":109756,"date":"2024-04-01T02:00:00","date_gmt":"2024-04-01T07:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/newsroom\/?p=109756"},"modified":"2024-03-29T13:00:10","modified_gmt":"2024-03-29T18:00:10","slug":"researchamerica-ceo-urges-unmc-to-spread-the-importance-of-research","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/newsroom\/2024\/04\/01\/researchamerica-ceo-urges-unmc-to-spread-the-importance-of-research\/","title":{"rendered":"Research!America CEO urges UNMC to spread the importance of research"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"panel body-content\"><div class=\"panel__container\">\n<p>Mary Woolley, president and CEO of Research!America, urged the health science professionals at UNMC to put a face on research \u2013 making health research personal for the general public.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Woolley delivered the inaugural Bob and Helen Bartee and Family Advocacy of Science Lectureship March 26 before a room of some of the med center\u2019s leading professionals gathered at the Fred &amp; Pamela Buffett Cancer Center.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At a time when federal research funding has dipped and public confidence in research has slipped, Woolley said the researchers and professionals at UNMC can join in common purpose with elected officials and the general public.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She said the four most important words for a scientist are: \u201cI work for you.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cResearch works for all of us,\u201d Woolley told the crowd in attendance. \u201cThat\u2019s the bottom-line message \u2013 you work for the public, I work for the public. Gold, MD, congratulates Mark Rupp, MD, on receiving the Bartee Advocacy of Science Award.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>In coordination with the lecture, UNMC\u2019s Mark Rupp, MD, chief of infectious diseases, received the Bartee Advocacy of Science Award, given to a UNMC scientist who exemplifies and lives out a commitment to community engagement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Aligning with Woolley\u2019s message, Dr. Rupp said: \u201cWe all play a role in educating the public about science and serving as advocates. And each and every one of us interact with our family, with our friends, with our neighbors. And in all of those interactions, we can serve as ambassadors for medical research and for medical science.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Woolley said she was deeply touched at the invitation to come to UNMC \u2013 and said it was the first time an academic medical health center has created such an advocacy award for science.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She told Dr. Rupp, \u201cThere should be more of you in more Lectureship.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>Woolley said individual science and research advocates can make a difference \u2013 becoming more visible in the community and helping the public more easily relate to the issues behind research.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Among the steps she urged UNMC officials to take:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Dedicate more time to community engagement and communication with the public.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Normalize science communication and public engagement by students, postdocs and faculty.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Support public engagement training on campus and events with the local community.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Woolley even offered some simple tips for \u201ctalking to non-scientists about science.\u201d Those included: Listen, tell a story that relates to the audience, avoid jargon and acronyms, and practice conversations with family and friends.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cBeing able to describe the work you do in a way that aligns with the aspirations of everybody else in our community,\u201d she said, \u201cis critical to the success in
