Cheryl Thompson, PhD, UNMC College of Nursing faculty emeritus, has published a new book meant to shed light on the viewpoint of cisgender wives of transgender women.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cInside My Husband\u2019s Closet\u201d details Dr. Thompson\u2019s shock, distress and eventual acceptance after her husband came out as transgender in 2020.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Using her journal from the first year to guide her discussion, Dr. Thompson relates the story of how her family lifestyle changed after 40 years of marriage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dr. Thompson said she was inspired to write the book because as a long-time ally to others in the LGBTQ+ community, she thought she would understand what lay ahead.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI did not,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Throughout the book, Dr. Thompson provides advice and insight to help spouses, family and friends who find themselves in similar experiences. She said she hopes the book fills the gaps for others.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Abbe Kruger, a certified life coach specializing in support of cis, trans, straight and gay partners, said the book is an \u201coutstanding primer for those whose partners recently came out as transgender.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIt\u2019s a comprehensive review of the many ways in which a partner\u2019s change in gender identity can challenge and strengthen a long-term relationship,\u201d Kruger said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dr. Thompson also maintains the blog \u201cCisgender Voices,\u201d an ongoing conversation with cisgender wives of trans women.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
