Ali S. Khan, MD, MPH, dean of the UNMC College of Public Health and Richard Holland Presidential Chair, has been appointed to a National Academies of Sciences Engineering and Medicine committee to review the U.S. Center for Disease Control\u2019s COVID-19 vaccine safety research and communications.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dr. Khan and the committee will evaluate the CDC\u2019s Immunization Safety Office systems, methods and processes for monitoring COVID-19 vaccine safety during the United States’ vaccination program. The committee also will provide recommendations for sustaining, maintaining and strengthening the Immunization Safety Office\u2019s current monitoring systems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Specifically, the committee will assess the statistical and epidemiological methods and processes used to detect and evaluate potential safety problems with the U.S. COVID-19 vaccines. This includes cataloging the findings from safety monitoring, encompassing both positive and negative findings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The committee also will evaluate CDC\u2019s external communications about its safety monitoring systems, the findings of COVID-19 vaccine safety monitoring and vaccination and clinical guidance recommendations to health care professionals, public health officials and the public.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
