Scientists advocate for scientific research funding<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Members of the American Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, including UNMC\u2019s Steve Caplan, PhD, met with elected officials and staff on Capitol Hill in May as part of the organization\u2019s annual Capitol Hill Day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

An article by ASBMB Today, the association\u2019s member magazine, says 25 members from 20 states participated in 65 meetings in Washington, D.C., \u201cto stress the importance of protecting and sustainably funding basic scientific research.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

ASBMB members urged an increase in the budgets for the National Institutes of Health, the National Science Foundation and the Department of Energy Office of Science in order \u201cto sustain the U.S. scientific enterprise,\u201d the article says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dr. Caplan, a professor in the UNMC Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, is a member of the organization\u2019s Public Affairs Advisory Committee and participated in the meetings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cFundamental research is one of the most important things for our society,\u201d Dr. Caplan said in the article. \u201cI think it’s something that’s not understood and not appreciated enough.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThis is our opportunity to advocate \u2014 to educate the politicians and policymakers and help them better understand what research can do for society on an economic level and also how it brings advances to applied science that will drive growth and better health for the citizens of our country and the globe.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

UNMC Bookstore, Sorrell Center C-store schedules<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The UNMC Bookstore and the convenience store in the Sorrell Center will have some schedule changes the week of June 17.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

UNMC Bookstore: The bookstore will be closed Tuesday, June 18, through Friday, June 21, for inventory. The staff will continue working behind the scenes to meet customers’ needs. Orders still can be placed online on the UNMC bookstore site<\/a> but may take a few extra days to process.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sorrell Center convenience store: It will be closed for inventory on Thursday, June 20, and Friday, June 21. Campus food vendors also will not be available in the Sorrell Center that Thursday and Friday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Food vendors will be available on both the east and west sides of UNMC\u2019s Omaha campus, serving from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. daily. The current schedule is:<\/p>\n\n\n\n
