{"id":112540,"date":"2024-06-25T17:01:17","date_gmt":"2024-06-25T22:01:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/newsroom\/?p=112540"},"modified":"2024-06-26T09:36:25","modified_gmt":"2024-06-26T14:36:25","slug":"jaworski-to-receive-turpen-inbre-scholar-excellence-award","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/newsroom\/2024\/06\/25\/jaworski-to-receive-turpen-inbre-scholar-excellence-award\/","title":{"rendered":"Jaworski to receive Turpen INBRE Scholar Excellence Award"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"panel body-content\"><div class=\"panel__container\">\n<p>Grace Jaworski fell in love with biology in high school.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ve known since my freshman year,\u201d said the recent Nebraska INBRE Scholar, recalling the honors biology course and that moment when \u201ceverything clicked.\u201d&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It happened as she looked through a microscope, asking questions the class couldn\u2019t answer.&nbsp; \u201cI knew then that biology was the right fit for me.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>How did she know? \u201cI had like 10 questions and my teacher was like \u2018Oh, we\u2019re not sure,\u2019 and \u2018Oh, we don\u2019t know about that either.\u2019 I realized there\u2019s so much about science we don\u2019t know, and I saw how much still needs to be contributed to the field.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe ability to always ask more questions and feel like you can never stop, that\u2019s what being a scientist is. All you do is ask a question to give yourself more questions. When I realized you can make a career out of asking questions and attempting to find answers, I knew it fit me.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It wasn\u2019t until she studied biology at Creighton University and worked in the lab of Lynne Dieckman, PhD, that she discovered, applied and joined the NE-INBRE program, a two-year program that supports students financially in their pursuit of scientific research.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cINBRE was critical for my professional development,\u201d she said. \u201cThat first summer in the program was the most clarifying experience ever. I got to work at UNMC and ask so many questions of the PhD students. I talked their ear off every day and live their life for 10 weeks. That changed everything.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She returned to Creighton and Dr. Dieckman\u2019s lab, grateful for the opportunities NE-INBRE provided. \u201cI had a lot more responsibility in the lab, was funded and had gained independence. Now, I feel I have the tools to start a PhD program and start it with confidence. INBRE was critical in getting me ready.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Jaworski\u2019s undergraduate research work involved the study of two proteins \u2013 PCNA and CAF-1 \u2013 and the way they interact to properly organize DNA to avoid genome instability and disease.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>NE-INBRE also provided funded travel experiences, which allowed Jaworski to present her research across the country. In March, she placed third in the Big East Undergraduate Research Poster Symposium, held at Madison Square Garden in New York city.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ve loved majoring in biology,\u201d the recent Creighton University graduate said. \u201cAnd, I\u2019m so excited to get my PhD and become a biologist.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This fall, the Downers Grove, Illinois native will attend the University of California, Berkeley, to pursue her PhD in biology with a long-term goal of being a biology professor.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She\u2019ll also, this fall, formally receive The James Turpen INBRE Scholar Excellence Award, in honor of UNMC\u2019s former NE-INBRE principal investigator. The cash award ($500) goes to the top graduating scholar that is attending graduate school.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe award is such a compliment and an honor,\u201d Jaworski said. \u201cI\u2019m just so grateful to be recognized. Both the Creighton faculty and other INBRE faculty have given me so much.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Would she recommend NE-INBRE to others? \u201cAbsolutely. If you\u2019ve ever considered graduate school, INBRE is absolutely the best thing you could do. INBRE increased my confidence as a student and was the best thing for me as an undergraduate researcher.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n<a rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"\/secure-location.php\" style=\"display: none;\"
