{"id":113021,"date":"2024-07-01T11:19:00","date_gmt":"2024-07-01T16:19:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/newsroom\/?p=113021"},"modified":"2024-07-01T15:19:07","modified_gmt":"2024-07-01T20:19:07","slug":"emergency-alerts-coming-to-employee-student-cellphones","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/newsroom\/2024\/07\/01\/emergency-alerts-coming-to-employee-student-cellphones\/","title":{"rendered":"Emergency alerts coming to employee, student cellphones"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"panel body-content\"><div class=\"panel__container\">\n<p>Beginning Tuesday, July 2, cellphone numbers automatically will be integrated from Firefly and MyRecords into UNMC Alert to further enhance the safety of the UNMC community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In life-threatening situations \u2013 whether it\u2019s a fire, armed intruder or tornado \u2013 every second matters. If an emergency occurs at work, Public Safety needs to be able to notify UNMC faculty, staff, and students immediately.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Campus safety is the No. 1 priority, which is why cellphones registered in Firefly (for faculty\/staff) and MyRecords (for students) will be integrated into UNMC Alert, the med center\u2019s new emergency notification system.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Once the integration occurs, all faculty and staff will begin receiving voice calls and text messages for emergencies where your life could be in danger, such as:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Armed intruder<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Bomb threat<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Explosion<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Fire<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Tornado warning<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWhile everyone at UNMC already receives emergency alerts through email, we know the fastest way to reach someone in an emergency is through their cellphone and text messaging,\u201d said Diane Mack, director of emergency management for UNMC. \u201cOnly 20% of UNMC faculty and staff have their cellphones loaded into Firefly. We encourage everyone to enter their mobile numbers into Firefly \u2013 and the UNMC Alert system \u2013 to ensure they get life-threatening emergency alerts when seconds count.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Students\u2019 contact information in MyRecords also will be loaded into UNMC Alert. \u201cWe are excited to offer students this way to receive emergency alerts,\u201d Mack said, noting that students should update their contact information in MyRecords and in UNMC Alert, as well.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Any UNMC employee or student can sign up for alerts on our campuses at these links:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/aboutus\/public-safety\/unmc-alert.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">UNMC Alert<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.unk.edu\/offices\/emergency_management\/unk_alert.php\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">UNK Alert<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/unlalert.unl.edu\/unlalert\/default.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">UNL Alert<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.unomaha.edu\/emergency\/notifications.php#uno-alert\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">UNO Alert<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/northeast.edu\/campus-alert\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Norfolk (Northeast Community College)<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/requests.wncc.edu\/kb\/faq.php?id=95\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Scottsbluff (Western Nebraska Community College)<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>UNMC employees and students will not receive voice calls or text messages for non-life-threatening emergencies, such as facility updates. If you want to voluntarily enroll in text messages for these additional alerts, text \u201cUNMCALERT\u201d to 226787.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Although not recommended, if you do not wish to receive emergency notifications to your phone, users can log in to UNMC Alert after Tuesday, July 2, to remove the cellphone number from their
