Tina Meinecke turned down an invitation to join the Munroe-Meyer Institute\u2019s bocce ball team last year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But this season, she decided to give it a go.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Last weekend, Meinecke left Special Olympics Nebraska\u2019s annual bocce ball tournament with a medal draped around her neck.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI\u2019m always open to trying new things,\u201d said Meinecke, who works at MMI.<\/p>\n\n\n

This season, Meinecke and her bocce ball partner Latrice Bond, who works in MMI\u2019s Speech-Language Pathology Department, were just trying to learn the ropes of bocce.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The goal is to roll a bocce ball closest to the target ball, called a pallina.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Meinecke and Bond have worked together for six years before they teamed up for bocce.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIt\u2019s been fun to learn the sport,\u201d Bond said. \u201cIt\u2019s a totally new experience for both of us.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Also part of the team are Rachel Mulligan, who also works at MMI, and her father Mike.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mulligan competed in bocce ball last year alongside her mother. This year she joined MMI\u2019s team with her dad.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The father-daughter duo admits they\u2019re competitive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe do pretty well,\u201d Mulligan said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mulligan also competes in snowshoeing, cross-country skiing, power lifting and other sports through Special Olympics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIt\u2019s a lot of fun,\u201d she said. \u201cI like getting to meet a lot of new athletes.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n

Rounding out MMI\u2019s team was the duo of Jacqueline Hankins-Berry, administrative programs associate at MMI, and Oscar Ascencio-Calles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

During the Special Olympics Nebraska competition, the MMI teams cheered each other on, offering high-fives and fist bumps after particularly good lobs of the bocce ball. Everyone walked away with a medal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI like that MMI offers us the opportunity to try new things,\u201d Bond said. \u201cJoining Special Olympics is something we can do to give back to our community.
