After 46 years of service to UNMC, John Ingraham has grown into a seasoned public safety professional who knows all the inner workings of the med center.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Which is not exactly what Ingraham mapped out with his college degree in vocal music education.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cAs you can see, I got right into my field of study,\u201d Ingraham quipped.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Yet the person who still can take the stage and hold a tune is the same one who helped elevate campus safety and security as the times and the med center have evolved.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

His coworkers and colleagues describe Ingraham as a caring leader who mentors new recruits and promotes a standard of professional excellence in public safety at UNMC. They say he brings kindness and respect to tense situations yet can step in as the authority if necessary.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Empathy. Honesty. Resilience. Courage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Those are qualities that people use to describe Ingraham \u2013 and that earned him a UNMC Gold U Award for August. Ingraham, who works as a security supervisor in the UNMC Public Safety Office, was recognized last Thursday at the University of Nebraska Board of Regents meeting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ingraham said he\u2019s \u201cabsolutely flabbergasted\u201d and \u201cextremely surprised\u201d but very happy about the award.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In her nomination letter, Theresa Woodrum, director of acute care specialty with Nebraska Medicine, described \u201cthe positive impact John Ingraham has had on all of us.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Woodrum wrote, \u201cHis friendly nature and ability to connect with everyone he meets has made him a familiar face to many. John\u2019s vast experience with change and his willingness to help has been invaluable.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ingraham acknowledges he\u2019s \u201ca people person.\u201d The people he meets and works with \u2013 a lot of \u201cdynamic\u201d people and often \u201cshakers and movers,\u201d as he calls them \u2013 are one of the reasons he\u2019s stayed so long at UNMC.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He appreciates interacting with them every day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIt definitely keeps it interesting,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ingraham, who started out as a security officer before being promoted to sergeant, has stories to tell.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Take the medical helicopter crash on campus in 1988, when Ingraham had just left his shift and returned after an urgent page \u2013 beating the fire department to the scene. Or the time Richard Simmons brought his \u201cSweatin\u2019 to the Oldies\u201d tour to UNMC \u2013 and called up Ingraham to the stage to help sing the oldies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cStuff like this is what kept me here, because every day could be different,\u201d Ingraham said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Nominator Steve Williamson, director of support services for the public safety office, said it\u2019s difficult to encapsulate the value Ingraham brings to the department, UNMC and Nebraska Medicine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Williamson wrote: \u201cHe literally has seen it all, done it all and is the go-to person on any issue involving the security of the campus. \u2026 I know of no one more deserving of this recognition. I\u2019m honored and humbled to have had the privilege of working alongside John Ingraham.\u201d<\/p>\n
