{"id":114403,"date":"2024-08-26T02:02:00","date_gmt":"2024-08-26T07:02:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/newsroom\/?p=114403"},"modified":"2024-08-26T11:05:49","modified_gmt":"2024-08-26T16:05:49","slug":"pat-hageman-phd-retiring-with-full-career-and-a-legacy","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/newsroom\/2024\/08\/26\/pat-hageman-phd-retiring-with-full-career-and-a-legacy\/","title":{"rendered":"Pat Hageman, PhD, retiring with full career and a legacy"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"panel body-content\"><div class=\"panel__container\">\n<p>Pat Hageman, PhD, was laughing as she told the story.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI underestimated how many details need to be completed before retiring after being at UNMC 40 years,\u201d she said. \u201cMy friends are having fun teasing me unmercifully, as I\u2019m not sure what I was thinking when I volunteered to teach on my last week and even on my last day.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you somehow haven\u2019t met her, over these past four decades, those few sentences give you a pretty good picture of Dr. Hageman: her joy, good humor and dedication to her beloved physical therapy program, even up to her very last day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Dr. Hageman, professor of physical therapy, will retire Aug. 31. The campus is invited to a celebration Tuesday, Aug. 27, from 1:30-3:30 p.m. in the Sorrell Center\u2019s Linder Reading Room. Remarks are set for 2 p.m.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Officially, she will serve just about a month short of 40 years. Just as she was physical therapy\u2019s program director for 19 years, not 20, from 1989-2008. In both cases, it was never about hitting some round number. In both cases, although it was a big step to take, it just felt like the right time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s scary,\u201d she said of decisions like that. \u201cIt\u2019s frightening because you know what? You can get your identity too much into your role.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cBut I actually have done everything I set out to do, and more.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Like what?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThings I didn\u2019t know I had the ability to do,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It would take a while to list them all.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-group callout\"><div class=\"wp-block-group__inner-container is-layout-flow wp-block-group-is-layout-flow\">\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">More on Pat Hageman, PhD<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>PhD, Medical Sciences Interdepartmental Area, UNMC; MS, HPER, University of Nebraska Omaha; BS, physical therapy, UNMC;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Hired as assistant professor of physical therapy, UNMC, October 1984 (program director 1989-2008);<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>UNMC Distinguished Scientist, 2012 (first from allied health);<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Inaugural Karen Linder Distinguished Professor for Women\u2019s Health;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Chair, American Physical Therapy Association advisory panel on education;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Appointed by U.S. Secretary of Health and Human Services to Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) advisory committee, sole physical therapist on five committee reports to congress on interprofessional health care workforce development;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Chair\/co-chair, College of Allied Health Professions promotion and tenure advisory committee.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cHer exemplary contributions have impacted every mission of the college,\u201d said Kyle Meyer, PhD, dean of the UNMC College of Allied Health Professions. \u201cTeaching, research, administration and community and professional service.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With Dr. Hageman at the helm of physical therapy for two decades, \u201cThe program catapulted to the national stage,\u201d Dr. Meyer said. During this time, UNMC \u201cwas one of the first public institutions to adopt the DPT (Doctor of Physical Therapy) degree and graduated more than 650 physical therapists to serve Nebraska and the nation.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The program also earned the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/newsroom\/2006\/03\/13\/physical-therapy-education-receives-top-teaching-award\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">NU University-wide Departmental Teaching Award in 2006<\/a> under Dr. Hageman\u2019s leadership. And earlier this year she helped contribute to physical therapy <a href=\"https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/newsroom\/2024\/05\/15\/unmc-physical-therapy-department-earns-nu-teaching-award\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">winning the prestigious honor for a second time<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She spent more than 20 years in research, as a National Institutes of Health-funded co-investigator. Dr. Hageman and others traveled the state, studying behavior-change interventions to promote physical activity and reduce cardiovascular disease risk among midlife and older men and women from rural communities. She collaborated with colleagues in UNMC\u2019s College of Nursing, the University of Nebraska-Lincoln\u2019s Nebraska Extension and other colleges. Dr. Hageman was named allied health\u2019s top researcher three times and contributed to 47 peer-reviewed publications.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She had joy in what she did every day, she said, and loved \u201cthat camaraderie that is inherent in our field.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That joy in connecting with others made her an impactful teacher, mentor and presence in the profession and on campus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cDr. Hageman\u2019s impact at UNMC will extend to future students through the legacy she leaves behind,\u201d said Betsy Becker, PhD, DPT, physical therapy program director. \u201cThis legacy is clearly reflected in the 10 existing faculty members who transitioned from being students to alumni during her career.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Dr. Becker pointed out that Dr. Hageman also had an integral role in hiring several other faculty members, including one who would go on to become the college\u2019s dean.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Dr. Hageman laughed again, saying she\u2019ll never forget the date she hired Dr. Meyer. It was April Fool\u2019s Day, 1991. They were classmates together in the UNMC PT program, graduating in 1979.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m the official, designated, bestowed-upon internal historian of the program, because I\u2019ve been here 40 of the 50 years of graduates,\u201d she said. \u201cI had a front row seat.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But now it\u2019s time. What will she do next? She doesn\u2019t have a grand plan. She will do her best to be retired and go from there. \u201cI don\u2019t know that I have always had balance in my life,\u201d she said. \u201cSo, it will be an adventure.\u201d She plans to spend more time with her husband, family and friends.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She will have time to devote to her interest in art. And one more thing for sure. \u201cI have to practice what I preach,\u201d she said. \u201cI\u2019ve done all that research on women and aging and healthy activity.\u201d She\u2019s already started high-intensity strength training and vows to hit the gym often.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>How does she feel, stepping away after almost 40 years? \u201cI\u2019m happy,\u201d she said. \u201cI started out being happy but not excited.
