{"id":114511,"date":"2024-08-29T02:00:00","date_gmt":"2024-08-29T07:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/newsroom\/?p=114511"},"modified":"2025-05-08T10:20:15","modified_gmt":"2025-05-08T15:20:15","slug":"unmcs-core-building-starts-to-go-vertical","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/newsroom\/2024\/08\/29\/unmcs-core-building-starts-to-go-vertical\/","title":{"rendered":"UNMC&#8217;s CORE building starts to go vertical"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"panel body-content\"><div class=\"panel__container\">\n<p>Construction is ramping up on UNMC\u2019s CORE (Campus Operations and Research Excellence) Building at the southwest corner of Saddle Creek Road and Farnam Street.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>People soon will begin to see structural steel erected on the site as crews continue work on the six-story office and lab building, scheduled for completion in late summer 2026. Once completed, the facility will support wet and dry lab-based research in critical areas (microbiology, physiology, pathology, genetics, life sciences, light chemistry) as well as computer-based research.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re excited to see vertical progress on the structure,\u201d said Chris Ehlers, project manager for UNMC Facilities, Management and Planning. \u201cIn the coming months, passersby will see the installation of steel, metal decking, concrete floors, fireproofing and brick-clad concrete wall panels.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In response to UNMC\u2019s Sustainability Strategic Plan, the building will have a strong focus on energy consumption related to the lab spaces. The building\u2019s design has been revised to incorporate the potential for four wet labs to expand pivotal research areas. Mechanical systems have been designed to accommodate future flexibility and scalability.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The CORE Building will serve as the cornerstone of UNMC\u2019s new Saddle Creek Campus at the corner of Saddle Creek Road and Farnam Street. The site also is in proximity to the Catalyst building, scheduled for completion later this year, which will bring together UNMC\u2019s UNeMed and UNeTech branches with biotech and technology startups and make the CORE Building ideal for research that leads to product and drug collaboration and innovation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The building is being designed to accommodate a future pedestrian bridge structure crossing over Saddle Creek Road, linking the Saddle Creek Campus to the main academic health science campus. Work also has begun on an adjacent parking structure \u2013 which the City of Omaha will pay for, own and operate \u2013 to serve the
