Hamid Band, MD, PhD, the Elizabeth Bruce Professor of Cancer Research with the UNMC Eppley Institute for Research in Cancer and Allied Diseases, has been named UNMC\u2019s 19th Scientist Laureate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The award is the highest honor that UNMC bestows upon its researchers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dr. Band, who joined UNMC in 2007 and also is director of the Center for Breast Cancer Research, studies molecular control of tyrosine kinase signaling. Or, as he once described in laymen terms, he researches how the body\u2019s \u201ccellular brakes\u201d control its \u201ccellular accelerators,\u201d aiming to devise therapies targeted at cancer cells.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cHamid has always focused on the fundamental biology \u2013 most notably the corruption of cell signaling processes that contribute to oncogenesis,\u201d said Ken Bayles, PhD, UNMC\u2019s vice chancellor for research. \u201cHe is a scientist\u2019s scientist, whose curiosity drives his research. I can\u2019t think of a better person to represent the Scientist Laureate Award this year.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Joann Sweasy, PhD, director of the Fred & Pamela Buffett Cancer Center and the Eppley Institute, said, \u201cDr. Band is an exceptional scientist and is most deserving of this award. He is also an outstanding colleague and mentor and an important leader in the Fred & Pamela Buffett Cancer Center.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dr. Band said he is honored to receive the recognition. He thanked UNMC\u2019s leadership and said the award is a tribute to many people: the researchers he\u2019s had the privilege of training in his labs; everyone whose efforts have supported and helped manage his science and funding efforts; and his collaborators \u201cfor helping us do things we couldn\u2019t have done ourselves.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Said Dr. Band, \u201cI hope that I can continue to live up to the expectations that such an award brings.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dr. Band will be honored, along with 22 other researchers named UNMC Distinguished Scientist, New Investigator and Research Leadership Award winners for 2024, during an awards ceremony on Thursday, Nov. 14, at 4 p.m. in the Durham Research Center Auditorium. A reception and poster session will follow in the Durham Research Center II commons area.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

New Investigator Awards<\/strong> go to outstanding UNMC scientists who in the past two years have secured their first funding from the National Institutes of Health, the U.S. Department of Defense or other national sources. New investigators also must demonstrate scholarly activity such as publishing their research and\/or presenting their findings at national conventions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
