{"id":116397,"date":"2024-10-23T14:01:05","date_gmt":"2024-10-23T19:01:05","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/newsroom\/?p=116397"},"modified":"2024-12-27T14:50:42","modified_gmt":"2024-12-27T20:50:42","slug":"mmi-faculty-recognized-as-unmc-circle-of-distinction","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/newsroom\/2024\/10\/23\/mmi-faculty-recognized-as-unmc-circle-of-distinction\/","title":{"rendered":"MMI faculty recognized as UNMC Circle of Distinction"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"panel body-content\"><div class=\"panel__container\">\n<p>Four Munroe-Meyer Institute faculty members were recognized in October as part of the UNMC Circle of Distinction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Circle of Distinction event, held Oct. 1, recognized the recipients of endowed chairs, professorships and fellowships \u2013 the highest academic awards the university can bestow on a faculty member \u2013 as well as the benefactors who supported them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>New MMI members included:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Craig Baker, MD, who holds the Friedland Family Distinguished Professorship of the Munroe-Meyer Institute, a gift of the Friedland Family Foundation<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Elizabeth Conover, who holds the Friedland Family Professorship of Genetic Counseling, a gift of the Friedland Family Foundation<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Susan Fager, PhD, who holds the Nebraska Scottish Rite Professorship, a gift of the Scottish Rite Foundation of Nebraska<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Amy Nordness, PhD, who holds the Robert and Myrna Krohn Family Professorship of the Munroe-Meyer Institute, a gift of Myrna L. Krohn<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The four MMI professors were part of 50 faculty members and their corresponding benefactors who were honored during the event, which also recognized more than 150 faculty and benefactors who previously had joined the Circle of Distinction \u2013 including MMI faculty members Jennifer Blackford, PhD, Jessica Gormley, PhD, Allice Shillingsburg, PhD, Melonie Welsh and MMI Director Karoly Mirnics, MD, PhD.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/newsroom\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/7849-2024-UNMC-NEMED-Circle-of-Distinction_Program-240923b-sjp.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>See the event program with a list of faculty recognitions and benefactors.<\/em><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Endowed positions are critical to UNMC\u2019s ability to recruit and retain the highest-quality faculty, said Interim Chancellor H. Dele Davies, MD. \u201cThe greatest institutions have the best minds \u2014 the most creative researchers, the most engaged educators. And, as we recognize today, UNMC has successfully attracted and retained leading stars in academic medicine \u2026 stars who will ensure we attract the best and brightest students.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Dr. Mirnics congratulated the new MMI members of the circle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThese are, indeed, our stars,\u201d he said. \u201cAnd as MMI continues in its mission to improve the lives of people with intellectual and developmental disabilities, and with the help of our generous benefactors, their work not only will impact their own fields but will inspire and guide their colleagues as we work together to create innovative practices and transformative outcomes in Nebraska and the world beyond.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Lori Byrne, executive vice president of advancement and campaign director for the University of Nebraska Foundation, praised all the donors and UNMC faculty who were honored.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cFaculty are one of the reasons donors want to invest in the University of Nebraska,\u201d she said. \u201cThese generous benefactors allow UNMC to recruit and retain faculty who are the best of the best and who will teach the next generation
