{"id":116545,"date":"2024-11-06T01:58:00","date_gmt":"2024-11-06T07:58:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/newsroom\/?p=116545"},"modified":"2024-11-06T10:02:35","modified_gmt":"2024-11-06T16:02:35","slug":"distinguished-scientist-wasim-nasser-phd","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/newsroom\/2024\/11\/06\/distinguished-scientist-wasim-nasser-phd\/","title":{"rendered":"Distinguished scientist: Wasim Nasser, PhD"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"panel body-content\"><div class=\"panel__container\">\n<p><em>This profile is part of a series to highlight the researchers who will be honored at a ceremony on Nov. 14 for UNMC\u2019s Scientist Laureate, Research Leadership, Distinguished Scientist and New Investigator Award recipients.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-group callout\"><div class=\"wp-block-group__inner-container is-layout-flow wp-block-group-is-layout-flow\">\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Distinguished Scientist<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The Distinguished Scientist Award \u2014 which is sponsored by the chancellor \u2014 recognizes researchers who have been among the most productive scientists at UNMC during the past five years.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Name:&nbsp;<\/strong>Mohd (Wasim) Nasser, PhD<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Title: <\/strong>Associate professor, Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, UNMC College of Medicine<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Joined UNMC:<\/strong>&nbsp;December 2015<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Hometown:<\/strong>&nbsp;Pilibhit, India<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Describe your research focus in three words or less:&nbsp;<\/strong>Brain metastasis<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Why is research important in the world today?&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Research in science leads to a better understanding of the world we view and capitalizes this knowledge for the betterment of mankind. Research also teaches us the concept of failure preceding success, which holds true in daily chores.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>My research will make a difference because:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>My research focuses on the basic biology behind the pathogenesis of brain metastasis and small cell lung cancer, both of which look to be unassailable for now. Cancer is a complex disease, so understanding this problem requires innovation and interdisciplinary approaches. My lab uses multiple models that include unique cancer cell lines isolated from the brain and lungs, ex-vivo organoids and genetically engineered mouse models to understand the intricacies at various aspects of tumors that surpass immunology, metabolism and tumor microenvironment. We are striving to develop novel and innovative therapies that can be employed for clinical management of brain metastases and recalcitrant small cell lung cancer patients.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>The best advice I\u2019ve ever received is:&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The best advice I have ever received was given to me by my father: \u201cThe key to success is to step out of your comfort zone.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Three things you may not know about me are:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>I am fond of reading, particularly history.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>I
