{"id":116602,"date":"2024-10-30T01:54:00","date_gmt":"2024-10-30T06:54:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/newsroom\/?p=116602"},"modified":"2024-10-30T10:15:50","modified_gmt":"2024-10-30T15:15:50","slug":"pen-researchers-have-special-town-and-gown-connection","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/newsroom\/2024\/10\/30\/pen-researchers-have-special-town-and-gown-connection\/","title":{"rendered":"PEN researchers have special &#8216;town and gown&#8217; connection"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"panel body-content\"><div class=\"panel__container\">\n<p>An unconventional collaboration between UNMC researchers and an Elmwood, Nebraska, farm family has led to a possible new therapy for Parkinson\u2019s disease.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Extracellular vesicles from bovine colostrum \u2013 known as \u201cfirst milk\u201d for newborn calves \u2013 have shown promise in fighting neurodegenerative disease in human disease animal models in an as-yet-unpublished study, UNMC researchers say.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>John and Carae Oehlerking\u2019s friendship and blossoming scientific collaboration with Howard Gendelman, MD, and the UNMC Department of Pharmacology and&nbsp;Experimental&nbsp;Neuroscience research team, co-led by Susmita Sil, PhD, has been transformative, Dr. Gendelman said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe have successfully purified a product from colostrum that has a unique ability to control the brain\u2019s nerve cell-killing inflammatory activities and halt degenerative responses seen in the early stages of Parkinson\u2019s disease,\u201d said Dr. Sil, assistant professor and senior scientist in the PEN department.&nbsp;The Oehlerkings and the Oehlerking Farm will be credited on a forthcoming paper alongside the Nebraska neuroscience research team.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Carae Oehlerking said the family recently hosted the research team for a \u201cFarm Festival.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe learned about the current research and enjoyed interacting with researchers at UNMC. At the same time, we wanted to share our love of the farm with them and allow the scientists to see where the colostrum originated,\u201d she said.&nbsp;\u201cThe connection we have had with UNMC over the past year and a half has helped us build a special relationship with people we could have never imagined working with.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The scientists agreed it was a pleasure to work with the Oehlerkings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe milk colostrum \u2013 received within 24 hours after the calf birth \u2013 showed strong neuroprotective properties in a rodent model of Parkinson&#8217;s disease,\u201d Dr. Sil said. Specifically, extracellular vesicles derived from colostrum showed promising potential to inhibit the neuroinflammatory and neurodegenerative process underlying the disease, which causes a profound loss of dopamine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThis unique property makes this a promising therapy for addressing the cause of Parkinson\u2019s disease,\u201d said R. Lee Mosley, PhD, professor and director of the movement disorders research program at the UNMC Department of Pharmacology and\u00a0Experimental\u00a0Neuroscience. He added that the therapy showed little to no side effects, offering a potentially more effective and disease-modifying treatment than existing therapies. The collaboration between the farming and UNMC teams may impact a range of other degenerative diseases, including Alzheimer\u2019s, stroke, multiple sclerosis and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, Dr. Mosley said.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cMost importantly, this project may lead to future natural therapeutics in Parkinson\u2019s disease and other neurodegenerative diseases,\u201d said Carol Swarts, MD, a UNMC graduate, long-term medical center supporter and part of the Oehlerking family. \u201cIt is a blessing for UNMC researchers in such a supportive environment.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While visiting the farm, UNMC researchers and their families \u2013 about 60 people in all \u2013 combined and offloaded corn into a truck, went on hay rack rides, fed cattle and picked pumpkins from the Oehlerkings\u2019 patch. The day ended with a meal and s\u2019mores around a bonfire.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThis program has embedded&nbsp;the farm community directly&nbsp;into the ongoing research, and the learning&nbsp;and information has been a two-way street,\u201d Dr. Gendelman said.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThat makes this project&nbsp;unique.
