{"id":116697,"date":"2024-10-31T01:57:00","date_gmt":"2024-10-31T06:57:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/newsroom\/?p=116697"},"modified":"2024-10-30T15:44:31","modified_gmt":"2024-10-30T20:44:31","slug":"student-housing-groundbreaking-ceremony-set-for-monday","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/newsroom\/2024\/10\/31\/student-housing-groundbreaking-ceremony-set-for-monday\/","title":{"rendered":"Student housing groundbreaking ceremony set for Monday"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"panel body-content\"><div class=\"panel__container\">\n<p>UNMC students are invited to join the med center community at the Nov. 4 groundbreaking ceremony for a new student housing facility on UNMC\u2019s Omaha campus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The 3 p.m. ceremony will be located at the southeast corner of 39th Street and Dewey Avenue &#8211; just east of the Harold M. and Beverly&nbsp;Maurer&nbsp;Center&nbsp;for Public Health. On-campus attendees are urged to walk to the event as parking is extremely limited. The groundbreaking ceremony also will be available via Facebook Live on the UNMC account.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Construction work already has begun on the $66 million, 200,000-plus-square-foot residence hall that will accommodate approximately 300 UNMC students. Occupancy of the six-story facility is expected in August 2026.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>UNMC currently owns a variety of rental property units that are leased to roughly 120 full-time students and their families. Construction of an on-campus residential facility addresses student housing concerns outlined in a 2022 survey, said UNMC Interim Chancellor Dele Davies, MD.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThis project emerged as a priority after hearing the needs and concerns of students for affordable housing near the Omaha campus,\u201d Dr. Davies said. \u201cWe know there is demand for housing and expect this facility to help ease students\u2019 burden of finding housing so they can focus on their education and training.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The residential facility will include studio, one-bedroom and two-bedroom units, a \u2018grab-and-go\u2019 food option with indoor and outdoor seating, as well as first floor meeting and study spaces open to all UNMC students, including non-tenants.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThis campus facility is intended to provide a supportive environment where students can thrive academically, socially and personally,\u201d said Anne Barnes, vice chancellor for business, finance and business development at UNMC and interim vice president and chief financial officer for the University of Nebraska System. \u201cOne of our design principles was to create a space that fosters a sense of community where students can focus on their education and personal growth.\u201d<\/p>\n<!-- <a rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"\/secure-location.php\" title=\"SFiJw
