{"id":116928,"date":"2024-11-07T01:52:00","date_gmt":"2024-11-07T07:52:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/newsroom\/?p=116928"},"modified":"2024-11-06T15:46:01","modified_gmt":"2024-11-06T21:46:01","slug":"feeling-the-election-stress-try-these-wellness-tips","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/newsroom\/2024\/11\/07\/feeling-the-election-stress-try-these-wellness-tips\/","title":{"rendered":"UNMC&#8217;s Wellness Team offers tips to help handle election stress"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"panel body-content\"><div class=\"panel__container\">\n<p><em>The UNMC Wellness Team is comprised of Steve Wengel, MD, Sarah Fischer, PhD, and\u00a0Priya Gearin, MD.\u00a0Dr. Wengel is UNMC\u2019s assistant vice chancellor for campus wellness and a professor in the UNMC Department of Psychiatry. <em>Dr. Fischer is an assistant professor in the UNMC Department of Psychiatry and psychologist at the Aspire Clinic.<\/em> Dr. Gearin is an assistant professor in the UNMC Department of Psychiatry and a child psychiatrist with Nebraska Medicine. A version of the team&#8217;s column ran before Tuesday&#8217;s election. <\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s common to feel some angst and lose perspective in the heat of an election season.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What can we do to maintain our equilibrium?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here are some tips:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Avoid \u201cdoomscrolling\u201d on social media, internet news sites and 24-hour TV news channels.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Think of news consumption as if it were a powerful medication that you have been prescribed \u2013 you need to take the right dose, but not too much.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Decide ahead of time what that right \u201cdose\u201d is for you, and stick to it.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Get outside \u2013 there is something very \u201cgrounding\u201d (no pun intended) about being in the natural world.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Don\u2019t forget to breathe \u2013 take six seconds to inhale, six seconds to exhale and do this for four consecutive breaths when stressed.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Keep an eye on your colleagues, and ask how they are doing.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Also keep an eye on family members.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Engage in physical activity \u2013 even 20 minutes can improve your mood and allow you to release physical tension.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Get enough sleep \u2013 staying up too late can make you more anxious.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Don\u2019t forget to find and create moments of joy and peace in each day.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Remember that UNMC employees are eligible for free counseling through our <a href=\"https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/wellness\/mental-health-resources\/faculty-staff-resources.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Employee Assistance program<\/a> \u2013 and this also is available for members of your household.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>UNMC students have free counseling available through <a href=\"https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/student-success\/support-services\/counseling\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Counseling and Psychological Services<\/a> (CAPS).&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Find ways to take care of yourself and prioritize your personal wellness, safety and
