{"id":117200,"date":"2024-11-14T01:58:00","date_gmt":"2024-11-14T07:58:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/newsroom\/?p=117200"},"modified":"2024-11-13T16:18:12","modified_gmt":"2024-11-13T22:18:12","slug":"learn-about-vaccines-at-next-science-cafe","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/newsroom\/2024\/11\/14\/learn-about-vaccines-at-next-science-cafe\/","title":{"rendered":"Learn about vaccines at next Science Caf\u00e9"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"panel body-content\"><div class=\"panel__container\">\n<p>Join James Lawler, MD, director of international programs and innovation at the UNMC Global Center for Health Security, for the Nov. 19 Omaha Science Caf\u00e9 as he presents on vaccines at 7 p.m. at the Slowdown.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Dr. Lawler, who also holds a master\u2019s degree in public health, came to UNMC in 2018 after a military career in which he served as a U.S. Navy commander and was chief of clinical biodefense research at the Naval Medical Research Center in Fort Detrick, Maryland.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He was an attending physician at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center and served in White House assignments on the staff of the Homeland Security Council and National Security Council, where he worked on biodefense, pandemic response and health preparedness.\u00a0Dr. Lawler\u00a0has field experience treating Ebola patients in Sub-Saharan Africa, and he served as a subject matter expert in the training of Department of Defense medical personnel working with infectious diseases patients. He is board certified in infectious diseases.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Science Caf\u00e9s involve a conversation with an expert about current science topics. They are open to everyone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Each meeting is organized around an interesting topic of conversation. Experts give a brief presentation followed by a Q&amp;A period.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Slowdown is located at 729 N. 14th St. in
