The newest members of the UNMC Gold Humanism Honor Society chapter were inducted during a ceremony on Feb. 1. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

A total of 20 third-year medical students, six residents and four members of the faculty were recognized. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Gold Humanism Honor Society annually recognizes third-year medical students, residents and faculty members who demonstrate exceptional compassion and empathy when caring for patients. The inductees also serve as role models, mentors and leaders in medicine. Gold Humanism Honor Society inductees are nominated by peers and faculty followed by a selection committee review.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cExceptional patient care extends beyond accurate diagnoses and treatment plans; it also means treating everyone with compassion, empathy and respect,\u201d said UNMC GHHS chapter faculty co-advisor Trek Langenhan, MD. \u201cThe UNMC Gold Humanism Honor Society works to model these values, provide space for reflection and foster a collaborative health care community.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The UNMC chapter was founded in 2015 with support from the Arnold P. Gold Foundation and is part of the greater national Gold Humanism Honor Society organization. The national organization was established in 2002 by the Arnold P. Gold Foundation, which was founded by Drs. Arnold and Sandra Gold at Columbia University. It now has more than 180 chapters in medical schools and residency programs and more than 45,000 members.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Annually, there is one graduating medical student and one faculty awardee of the Leonard Tow Humanism in Medicine Award<\/a>. The award recipients were announced in March<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to the society, members have “a responsibility to model, support and advocate for compassionate, patient-centered care throughout their careers.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201c<\/strong>Being in GHHS has given me the opportunity to connect with countless younger students through various resiliency dinners, breakfast breaks and this induction ceremony,\u201d said Grace Kelly, UNMC College of Medicine class of 2025 and vice president of UNMC\u2019s GHHS chapter. \u201cThese are students who I might not have crossed paths with if I hadn’t been involved. It means getting to share my story and using it to help younger students through their trials and tribulations.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
