{"id":119776,"date":"2025-02-27T02:00:00","date_gmt":"2025-02-27T08:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/newsroom\/?p=119776"},"modified":"2025-02-26T13:48:40","modified_gmt":"2025-02-26T19:48:40","slug":"regents-review-policy-updates-in-response-to-federal-guidance","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/newsroom\/2025\/02\/27\/regents-review-policy-updates-in-response-to-federal-guidance\/","title":{"rendered":"Regents review policy updates in response to federal guidance"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"panel body-content\"><div class=\"panel__container\">\n<p>The University of Nebraska Board of Regents held a special meeting on Feb. 25 to review bylaws and policies relevant to a recent <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ed.gov\/media\/document\/dear-colleague-letter-sffa-v-harvard-109506.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">letter<\/a> shared by the U.S. Department of Education.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The meeting, held at Varner Hall, 3835 Holdrege St. in Lincoln, began with remarks from University of Nebraska President Jeffrey P. Gold, MD, who emphasized the importance of the policy review process within the university\u2019s broader <a href=\"https:\/\/nebraska.edu\/strategic-plan\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">strategic planning efforts<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe have been working for almost six months now \u2014 since almost my first day as the president of your university \u2014 on a strategic planning process,\u201d Dr. Gold said. \u201cPart of that process has been a commitment to review, discuss and update policies and procedures, including the Board of Regents bylaws, policies and standing rules.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Policies and bylaws up for review on the Feb. 25 meeting included:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Amendments to regents\u2019 policies:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>RP-3.1.3 (Equal Opportunity Employment)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>RP-5.2.1 (Admissions Standards)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>RP-5.7.4 (Tuition Levels)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>RP-5.8.4 (Non-Resident Tuition Remission for Children of Alumni)\\<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Addendum VI-A-1<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Updates to the bylaws of the board of regents:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Section 3.0 (Addendum VI-A-2)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Dr. Gold noted that many of these policies had not been updated since the early 1980s and require revision to reflect current terminology, program names and administrative titles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThat process has been on schedule, and I am deeply grateful to all the members of the Varner Hall team, our chancellors and to many in our general counsel&#8217;s office who have provided wisdom as necessary to help with updates,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Feb. 14 letter from the U.S. Department of Education prompted the university to call a special meeting to address potential <a href=\"https:\/\/nebraska.edu\/-\/media\/projects\/unca\/docs\/board-of-regents\/agendas-and-minutes\/2025\/february-25-board-meeting\/agenda-2-25-25-with-materials.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">bylaw and policy changes<\/a> sooner than originally planned, Dr. Gold said. The letter, which was shared nationwide, has prompted similar reviews at colleges and universities across the country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While policy changes can be enacted with a single board vote, bylaw changes require a two-meeting review process before formal adoption. As a result, these potential changes will be considered at future meetings, alongside a broader review of all university bylaws.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The board will continue its review process at its
