The award recognizes an emerging health science educator who demonstrates excellence, dedication and perseverance in teaching and education early in their career.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Name: <\/strong>Leah Stade, OTD<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Title:<\/strong>&nbsp;Assistant professor in the Division of Occupational Therapy, UNMC College of Allied Health Professions, and academic fieldwork coordinator<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Joined UNMC:<\/strong>&nbsp;April 2020<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Hometown:<\/strong>&nbsp;Kearney, Nebraska<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>You are the recipient of the Emerging Educator Award. How has innovation played a part in your teaching career?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I sought out innovative ways to be part of occupational therapy education long before I started at UNMC. In developing occupational therapy education curricula, I often found\u00a0myself wishing for a more useful resource. This sometimes\u00a0meant creating one myself. I also\u00a0continued learning through the health professions teaching and technology program\u00a0and other educational opportunities. At UNMC, we are educating\u00a0future OTs in unique ways and preparing our students to be innovative and creative\u00a0in\u00a0their search for best practices in our field and beyond.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Describe your proudest\u00a0moment as an educator.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>My students\u00a0often make\u00a0me proud.\u00a0My favorite thing is to\u00a0meet with them\u00a0after they complete their long-term\u00a0fieldwork placements and hear about how they are connecting didactic\u00a0learning to real-world OT practice. I love seeing students overcome challenges to become OT practitioners who\u00a0would\u00a0make great fieldwork educators for future students. The \u201cah-ha\u201d\u00a0moments are the best, whether with\u00a0my OTD learners or the ones I have at home.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>What advice would you give other faculty\u00a0members who want to have an impact in education?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Find your people: those who ask you the hard &#8220;why&#8221; and &#8220;how&#8221; questions, those who are willing to cheer on your unconventional ideas, those who have the skill sets you wish you had. Then bring them\u00a0all together, support one another and impact those you educate. You never know if you\u00a0will have an impact unless you try. Once you know you have\u00a0made an impact, share that knowledge with others.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Do you have a favorite quote or philosophy on teaching?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A colleague once told\u00a0me: We can&#8217;t keep teaching the way it has always been done because we are preparing learners for careers, professions and lessons that don&#8217;t exist yet.
