{"id":120475,"date":"2025-03-20T02:00:00","date_gmt":"2025-03-20T07:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/newsroom\/?p=120475"},"modified":"2025-03-20T08:36:53","modified_gmt":"2025-03-20T13:36:53","slug":"match-day-unmc-medical-students-find-their-paths","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/newsroom\/2025\/03\/20\/match-day-unmc-medical-students-find-their-paths\/","title":{"rendered":"Match Day: UNMC medical students find their paths"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"panel body-content\"><div class=\"panel__container\">\n<p>Medical students from UNMC will learn their residency assignments on Match Day, joining their counterparts at schools nationwide to learn for the first time where they will be studying their chosen specialties following graduation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>UNMC\u2019s event will be held on Friday in a new venue, the Omaha Design Center at 1502 Cuming St. Doors open at 10 a.m. \u2013 students will learn their matches at 11 a.m.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-group callout\"><div class=\"wp-block-group__inner-container is-layout-flow wp-block-group-is-layout-flow\">\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Match Day<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The UNMC College of Medicine Match Day will be held Friday, March 21, at the Omaha Design Center, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/maps\/place\/Omaha+Design+Center\/@41.2686413,-95.9360769,16z\/data=!3m1!4b1!4m6!3m5!1s0x87938fb5fcf1a0a1:0xa4735f37aadc9b15!8m2!3d41.2686413!4d-95.9360769!16s%2Fg%2F11cmj311sr?entry=ttu&amp;g_ep=EgoyMDI1MDIyNS4wIKXMDSoASAFQAw%3D%3D\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"1502 Cuming St., opens in a new window\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">1502 Cuming St.<\/a> All fourth-year medical students, their guests and UNMC College of Medicine faculty and staff are invited to attend. Tickets are not required for entrance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Schedule:<\/strong> Doors open at 10:00 a.m. Students should arrive by 10:30 a.m. A processional will take place at 10:45 a.m. Students will learn their matches at 11 a.m. The ceremony will last approximately one hour.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Livestream:<\/strong>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/nebraskapublicmedia.org\/en\/series-media\/non-series-video\/unmc-college-of-medicine-match-day-2025-50026654\/\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Watch the celebration online., opens in a new window\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Watch the celebration online.<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Danielle Tibbels of Omaha is one of the students who will be matching. The fourth generation of her family to graduate from UNMC, she hopes to match in internal medicine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThere have been weeks that felt like years, and there have been months that have passed in the blink of an eye,\u201d Tibbels said of her medical school journey. \u201cGoing through medical school is kind of like scaling a mountain, I would say, except that mountain is made of a ton of little hills, and sometimes all you have to do is just focus on the little hill and ignore the giant mountain that you&#8217;re climbing. So that&#8217;s all your block exams, your lab practicals, your USMLE exams, that&#8217;s all of your clinical rotations and shelves and applying to places and interviewing \u2013 all of these little things that you&#8217;re doing basically build up to this, to what we&#8217;re about to find out on Friday.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Grace Kelly of Omaha, who is diagnosed with dyslexia, said her struggles with the learning disability have made her passionate about the educational side of medicine. During her medical school career, she has mentored and counseled other med students with learning challenges, as well.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cOriginally, I wanted to be some sort of teacher,\u201d she said. \u201cI didn&#8217;t realize until my senior year of undergrad, which is when I switched to medicine, that to be a physician, you have to be an educator. \u2026 That&#8217;s what prompted me to switch gears, not switch gears from education but find a passion for education in health care.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Bradley Britigan, MD, dean of the UNMC College of Medicine, said many of this week\u2019s matching medical students have overcome personal challenges, and for the faculty and leadership of the college, Match Day is a treasured way to celebrate their accomplishments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cOur students will carry the memories of this pivotal day in every physician\u2019s journey with them for the rest of their lives,\u201d Dr. Britigan said. \u201cThe faculty and staff of the college are always thrilled to have the opportunity to be part of their celebration and recognize what they have accomplished.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For Kelly, the future is bright \u2013 although heading into the event, she admitted she was nervous.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cJust like every new chapter of my life, I&#8217;m going to think that I can&#8217;t do it at the beginning. At the beginning of med school, I didn&#8217;t think I&#8217;d be sitting in this chair today.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI&#8217;ll be able to get through it,\u201d she said. \u201cAnd wherever I go, I&#8217;ll talk about having dyslexia, and I&#8217;ll advocate for my needs and advocate for the needs of others around me.
