Registration is open for the Center for Chronic Illness Self-management and Prevention\u2019s spring symposium. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The symposium, titled \u201cConnections: Strategies for Bringing Community and Science Together,\u201d is scheduled for Saturday, May 17, from 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. at The Venue at Highlander, 2120 N St. in Omaha.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Keynote speaker Victor Sutton, PhD, chief of community health and health services at Mississippi State Department of Health and principal investigator at the Jackson Heart Study Community Engagement Center, will present \u201cThe Art and Science of Community Engagement.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Additional speakers are Juan Santamaria, MD, associate professor in the UNMC Department of Surgery, Division of Surgical Oncology, and Mariah Jackson, PhD, instructor of medical nutrition at the UNMC College of Allied Health Professions. The symposium includes an abstract poster session, additional speakers on chronic illness prevention and management and a roundtable discussion. The symposium is geared towards researchers, clinicians and scholars who implement and study chronic illness solutions as well as community members interested in learning more about how research informs solutions for them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Learning objectives include articulating how clinical research impacts chronic illness management in communities and identifying strategies for community engagement in clinical research studies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Administered within the UNMC College of Nursing, CRISP is an interdisciplinary community of faculty, students and experts from clinical and academic backgrounds, along with community members whose work and interests focus on the prevention and self-management of chronic illness including cardiovascular disease, diabetes and cancer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The May 17 symposium is presented by CRISP\u2019s Community Engagement and Scholarship Core, led by Linda Smith, PhD, UNMC College of Nursing clinical assistant professor, and co-chaired by community leader Carolyn T. (C.T) Williamson.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
