{"id":122387,"date":"2025-05-23T15:51:04","date_gmt":"2025-05-23T20:51:04","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/newsroom\/?p=122387"},"modified":"2025-07-14T12:55:25","modified_gmt":"2025-07-14T17:55:25","slug":"bhecn-funding-helps-mmi-fill-rural-internships","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/newsroom\/2025\/05\/23\/bhecn-funding-helps-mmi-fill-rural-internships\/","title":{"rendered":"BHECN funding helps MMI fill rural internships"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"panel body-content\"><div class=\"panel__container\">\n<p>For the first time in several years, the Munroe-Meyer Institute has filled all three of its rural psychology internship spots.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That\u2019s thanks, in part, to funding from the Behavioral Health Education Center of Nebraska (BHECN).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The internship slots have been harder and harder to fill, said Brandy Clarke, PhD, director of MMI\u2019s Department of Psychology.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s more competition and more training spots out there,\u201d Dr. Clarke said. \u201cOne of the challenges is recruiting people to rural communities because of size and location.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The internships are in Kearney, Norfolk and Chadron. The three pre-doctoral interns will have rotations as behavioral health providers working alongside primary care or family practice physicians.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>BHECN contributed funds toward rural housing for the internships. That will likely cover housing costs for the three interns, Dr. Clarke said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cBeing able to provide funding to support interns in rural areas is incredibly meaningful \u2014 it\u2019s not just an investment in individuals, but in the future of the rural workforce,\u201d said Marley Doyle, MD, BHECN director. \u201cThese opportunities help cultivate local talent, strengthen rural communities, and ensure that critical services are available where they\u2019re needed most. Supporting this kind of growth is a step toward a more equitable and sustainable health care system.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>BHECN has supported several MMI initiatives, including the recent opening of the Fremont Autism Care for Toddlers Clinic. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One goal at MMI is to meet the needs of those in communities where services are hard to find. That can\u2019t be done without growing the workforce, Dr. Clarke said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Two of the three providers aren\u2019t native to the communities they\u2019re in.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThey were trainees who stayed on after their training,\u201d she said. \u201cWe know the model works because folks providing supervision in these communities are examples. This is a great partnership with BHECN for MMI to continue to expand the workforce.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Munroe-Meyer Institute has filled all
