{"id":123889,"date":"2025-07-22T01:57:00","date_gmt":"2025-07-22T06:57:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/newsroom\/?p=123889"},"modified":"2025-07-21T16:52:51","modified_gmt":"2025-07-21T21:52:51","slug":"support-energy-conservation-during-extreme-heat","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/newsroom\/2025\/07\/22\/support-energy-conservation-during-extreme-heat\/","title":{"rendered":"Campus asked to conserve energy during extreme heat"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"panel body-content\"><div class=\"panel__container\">\n<p>Energy curtailment is a proactive strategy by the med center to reduce energy use during times of high demand \u2014 such as extremely hot or humid summer days when power systems are under strain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The facilities department is taking curtailment measures this week, and asks the med center community to help conserve energy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The med center implements curtailment days in summer months to protect the reliability of vital hospital and research systems. Patient care and critical research activities are not impacted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Curtailment efforts across the med center keep essential hospital and research functions operating reliably. These steps also save utility costs, redirecting funding toward mission-critical initiatives, while also reducing emissions, supporting cleaner air and helping the med center meet sustainability goals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here are some ways to help during energy curtailment days:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Close window shades, blinds and curtains to reduce <a href=\"https:\/\/www.energy.gov\/energysaver\/energy-performance-ratings-windows-doors-and-skylights\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"solar heat gain, opens in a new window\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">solar heat gain<\/a>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Lower lighting levels and turn off lights in unused spaces.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Turn off and unplug unused electrical devices, such as computers, printers, coffee makers and chargers.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Charge laptops, phones and other equipment after 7 p.m., when possible.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Shut fume hood sashes when not in use. Remember: \u201cShut the Sash!\u201d<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Use manual door operation instead of using ADA buttons, if possible.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Take the stairs instead of the elevator whenever possible.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Encourage coworkers to take the same proactive steps to curtail energy use.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Experiencing extreme temperatures?
