{"id":124708,"date":"2025-08-20T01:58:00","date_gmt":"2025-08-20T06:58:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/newsroom\/?p=124708"},"modified":"2025-08-19T11:38:58","modified_gmt":"2025-08-19T16:38:58","slug":"third-annual-symposium-offers-ideas-for-innovative-education","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/newsroom\/2025\/08\/20\/third-annual-symposium-offers-ideas-for-innovative-education\/","title":{"rendered":"Third annual symposium offers ideas for innovative education"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"panel body-content\"><div class=\"panel__container\">\n<p>UNMC faculty, staff and students are invited to attend the third annual <a href=\"https:\/\/go.unmc.edu\/symposium\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"InnovatED Symposium, opens in a new window\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">InnovatED Symposium<\/a> on Tuesday, Sept. 30, from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Hosted by the UNMC Interprofessional Academy of Educators (IAE) and UNMC Distance Education, the symposium brings together individuals from across the university who are passionate about advancing their teaching practices through breakthrough innovations and peer collaboration. <a href=\"https:\/\/go.unmc.edu\/symposium\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Register to attend at this link, opens in a new window\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Register to attend at this link<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A highlight of this year\u2019s event is a keynote presentation by <a href=\"https:\/\/thomasjtobin.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Thomas Tobin, opens in a new window\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Thomas Tobin<\/a>, PhD, a learning developer and founding member of the University of Wisconsin-Madison Center for Teaching, Learning &amp; Mentoring. Dr. Tobin will spotlight research-based, low-effort teaching strategies designed to reduce student anxiety, improve engagement and lighten instructor workload.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe are thrilled to welcome Dr. Tobin, a nationally recognized expert in educational technology integration, to this year\u2019s symposium,\u201d said Tanya Custer, PhD, director of the UNMC Interprofessional Academy of Educators. \u201cThe InnovatED Symposium will offer attendees fresh ideas, emerging trends and collaborative opportunities to inspire and enhance their teaching practices.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In addition to the keynote, UNMC experts will present on topics such as artificial intelligence, immersive simulation technologies, educational scholarship and more.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Event co-host Analisa McMillan, PhD, director of UNMC Distance Education, said, \u201cThe rise of generative AI, simulation technology and other advanced teaching methods is transforming medical education. The InnovatED Symposium provides a platform for educators to learn from and collaborate with colleagues who are already implementing these technologies in their classrooms and clinical settings.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Additionally, the IAE will announce and recognize the newest Distinguished Educators. The highest honor in academy membership, the Distinguished Educator designation is awarded to faculty members who consistently demonstrate excellence in teaching and peer mentoring.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The InnovatED Symposium is free for UNMC faculty, staff and students, as well as members of the IAE; advance <a href=\"https:\/\/go.unmc.edu\/symposium\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"registration is required, opens in a new window\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">registration is required<\/a>. A $50 registration fee applies to non-UNMC attendees. Payment instructions will be emailed following registration.
