The games and challenges presented by those sessions didn\u2019t pack the same luster.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But two years ago, Strobel found Hand Arm Bimanual Intensive Training Virtual Reality camp at the Munroe-Meyer Institute.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The camp uses virtual reality gaming to net similar results to traditional HABIT camp, which is designed to allow children with cerebral palsy and other conditions to work on using both hands to complete a task in the form of play.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Strobel, now 15, doesn\u2019t see the camp as just another therapy session.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI feel like I\u2019m in a dream,\u201d he said during his first session of camp. \u201cI wake up every morning and it\u2019s time for video games.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This summer, Strobel tackled another 10-day session at MMI \u2014 this time with an added element. Strobel was one of four campers to participate using brain-computer interface (BCI).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Munroe-Meyer Institute\u2019s HABIT VR Camp teams with UNO\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/EMbMiI9h598?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>By wearing a sensor cap, camp facilitators could see the regions of Strobel\u2019s brain and could track the intention to move his upper limbs. Facilitators can then administer gentle stimulation to encourage movement in participants&#8217; weaker arm.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>To be effective, campers need to repeat the same motion over and over. The virtual reality element is key in helping them from getting bored or fatigued, said Dr. Behboodi, who designed and implemented the BCI aspect of camp.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The goal of using BCI, he said, is to see better connection between the brain and the muscles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe want a healthy level of challenge \u2014 both physically and mentally \u2014 to get them to the next level from where they started at camp,\u201d Dr. Behboodi said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The MMI team will compare results of campers during the BCI-VR camp and the VR camp alone, said Andrea Cunha, PhD, assistant professor in the MMI Department of Physical Therapy. They measure and compare how both camps can help participants with the use of their arms and hands, such as bimanual coordination, dexterity and participation in daily activities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe use clinical measures to see how they use both hands together,\u201d Dr. Cunha said. \u201cOur goal is not only to make sure we\u2019re getting similar or better results, but also to understand how we can best support children.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Drs. Camp is designed to get participants using both hands equally through the virtual reality games, but also in making snacks and playing on the playground.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThey get very good at doing things with one hand,\u201d Dr. Cunha said. \u201cAt the beginning of camp, we have to prompt them to use that non-dominant hand in the games. As time passes, you see the use of that hand coming naturally.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At his first HABIT VR camp in 2023, Strobel received plenty of reminders to use both hands as he played different video games.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Those reminders came fewer and farther between during this session. Strobel used both hands as he manipulated the handsets to shoot rockets at blocky looking aliens.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Strobel has gained more independence in the two years between HABIT VR camp sessions, his mother Heidi Reagan said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He can tackle everyday tasks, such as using a shower chair or combing his own hair.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And during the last school year, he learned to use a power assist on his manual wheelchair to help him better steer through the halls. Now he\u2019s graduated to using a power chair.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While all of Strobel\u2019s therapies have helped with finding mobility in his weaker arm, HABIT camp helped to teach him how to better use his right hand, Reagan said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt gave him the ingenuity and totally boosted his confidence,\u201d she said. \u201cIt came at a time when he needed it. It\u2019s taught him how to benefit his daily life.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Camp can also provide respite for parents and caregivers. In addition to HABIT VR camp, MMI offers summer and winter camps through the recreational therapy, physical therapy and occupational therapy departments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Reagan said she always hoped to give her son a typical summer camp experience. Vinny took part in the traditional HABIT VR camp this summer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI get to interact with other kids who have cerebral palsy just like me,\u201d the 10-year-old said. \u201cWe get to play video games acting as therapy. We work hard but it\u2019s very fun.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Strobel echoed how hard they work at camp.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s a good workout,\u201d Strobel said. \u201cIt\u2019s kind of its own therapy.
