Registered dental hygienist Todd Junge, assistant professor of dental hygiene at the UNMC College of Dentistry, has been named the inaugural 2025 Gwen Hlava, RDH, MS, UNMC Dental Hygiene Faculty Fellow.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The fellowship, named for the retired longtime chair of the department<\/a>, recognizes outstanding contributions to dental hygiene education, clinical excellence and community service. The fellowship celebrates Junge\u2019s enduring commitment to advancing the profession and mentoring future leaders in oral health care.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hlava said she was happy to see Junge receive the inaugural fellowship.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“He’s absolutely a natural,” said Hlava. “There are so many good things I can say about him that it’s hard for me to come up with one.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hlava first met Junge as a student, then hired him as faculty, calling him a “gifted educator.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“He always keeps his eye on the prize — the students. They are foremost in his mind and what more can you ask from an educator. It’s an honor to present this to him.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Junge, who worked with Hlava before her retirement in 2024, echoed her by saying receiving the fellowship was an honor, as well.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cGwen Hlava dedicated her life to dental hygiene and education, and to receive this fellowship named in her honor is humbling,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Junge co-authored the chapter \u201cManagement of Pain and Anxiety\u201d in both the 7th and 8th editions of Darby\u2019s <\/em>\u201cComprehensive Review of Dental Hygiene,\u201d a foundational text in dental hygiene education.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Tammie Vargo, DHA, chair of the department, said the department was \u201cincredibly proud\u201d of Junge receiving the fellowship.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThis award celebrates a legacy of advancing excellence in dental hygiene education,\u201d Dr. Vargo said. \u201cMs. Hlava\u2019s commitment to supporting educators continues to impact the field.  Mr. Junge exemplifies that same unwavering passion and profound impact on the profession.  He continually goes above and beyond to elevate our program and inspire both students and colleagues — making him a truly deserving recipient of this prestigious recognition.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
