{"id":125706,"date":"2025-09-15T01:54:00","date_gmt":"2025-09-15T06:54:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/newsroom\/?p=125706"},"modified":"2025-09-30T14:19:40","modified_gmt":"2025-09-30T19:19:40","slug":"midwest-cancer-symposium-is-oct-7-at-unmc","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/newsroom\/2025\/09\/15\/midwest-cancer-symposium-is-oct-7-at-unmc\/","title":{"rendered":"Midwest cancer symposium is Oct. 7 at UNMC"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"panel body-content\"><div class=\"panel__container\">\n<p>The Child Health Research Institute, UNMC Department of Public Health and Fred &amp; Pamela Buffett Cancer Center will hold the second annual <a href=\"https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/chri\/news\/midwestcancersymposium.html\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Midwestern Symposium on Environmental Determinants of Pediatric Cancer and Congenital Anomalies, opens in a new window\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Midwestern Symposium on Environmental Determinants of Pediatric Cancer and Congenital Anomalies<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The event will be Tuesday\u00a0from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m., Oct. 7,\u00a0at the Truhlsen Events Center on the UNMC Omaha campus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The symposium is open to faculty, researchers, health care providers, students and others interested in pediatric cancer, congenital anomalies and their connection to environmental conditions. Advanced <a href=\"https:\/\/app.smartsheet.com\/b\/form\/9c82b814d16c447fbea7775ec680133c\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"registration, opens in a new window\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">registration<\/a> is required and open until Monday, Sept. 29.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The symposium aims to bring together researchers, health care professionals and other stakeholders from across the region to share insights, foster collaboration and advance research on the environmental factors contributing to pediatric cancer and congenital anomalies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The keynote address will be delivered by&nbsp;Tom Luben, PhD, an adjunct associate professor in the Department of Epidemiology at the Gillings School of Global Public Health, University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill. Dr. Luben also is a senior epidemiologist at the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The symposium will feature two panel discussions:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Intersection between cancer and congenital disorders<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Eric Durbin, DrPH, associate professor, Department of Internal Medicine, University of Kentucky College of Medicine; director of cancer research informatics, Markey Cancer Center.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Julie Petersen, PhD, assistant professor, Department of Epidemiology, UNMC College of Public Health.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Darrin Thompson, PhD, associate director, Center for Health Effects of Environmental Contamination, University of Iowa.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Kari Weber, PhD, assistant professor, Department of Epidemiology, Fay W. Boozman College of Public Health, University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Environmental exposure and pediatric health conditions<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Jesse Bell, PhD, Claire M. Hubbard Professor of Water, Climate and Health, UNMC College of Public Health.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Shannon Bartelt-Hunt, PhD, Donald R. Voelte, Jr. and Nancy A. Abstract submissions are due by\u00a0Wednesday, Sept. 24, and participants are responsible for the cost of printing their own posters.
