{"id":126227,"date":"2025-10-02T02:00:00","date_gmt":"2025-10-02T07:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/newsroom\/?p=126227"},"modified":"2025-10-01T14:26:56","modified_gmt":"2025-10-01T19:26:56","slug":"dr-odell-stepping-aside-at-rheumatology-chief","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/newsroom\/2025\/10\/02\/dr-odell-stepping-aside-at-rheumatology-chief\/","title":{"rendered":"Dr. O&#8217;Dell stepping aside as rheumatology chief"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"panel body-content\"><div class=\"panel__container\">\n<p>James O\u2019Dell, MD, who has served as chief of the UNMC Division of Rheumatology for 35 years, will step aside from that leadership post Jan. 1. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/intmed\/divisions\/rheum\/faculty\/odell.html\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Dr. O\u2019Dell, opens in a new window\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Dr. O\u2019Dell<\/a> will continue to serve as professor of internal medicine and is not entering full retirement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m still going to be in the division, seeing patients, teaching, doing some of my research \u2013 though it is not as deep and robust as it once was,\u201d Dr. O\u2019Dell said. \u201cI\u2019m still going to be around.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Yet the change at the top of the division marks the end of an era at UNMC. During Dr. O\u2019Dell\u2019s tenure, the UNMC Division of Rheumatology ascended to a position of national prominence in education and produced the kind of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/intmed\/divisions\/rheum\/research\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"translational research, opens in a new window\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">translational research<\/a> that has had an enormous impact on patient care.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s been an incredible ride for me,\u201d Dr. O\u2019Dell said. \u201cI\u2019m proud of what we\u2019ve built and all of the amazingly talented individuals who make up our division.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Bryant England, MD, PhD, associate professor of rheumatology, will serve as interim chief.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-group callout\"><div class=\"wp-block-group__inner-container is-layout-flow wp-block-group-is-layout-flow\">\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The James O&#8217;Dell file<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Founded and has directed the Rheumatoid Arthritis Investigational Network (RAIN) for the last 25 years.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Graduate of the UNMC College of Medicine.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>First chief resident for Michael Sorrell, MD.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Appointed chief of rheumatology at age 28 by James Armitage, MD.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Has overseen the training of more than 1,000 residents.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>UNMC Educator Laureate and UNMC Distinguished Scientist.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Division chief, VA Nebraska-Western Iowa Health Care System.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Former president, American College of Rheumatology.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>American College of Rheumatology\u2019s (ACR) highest award, the Presidential Gold Medal.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Breakthrough <a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/?term=O%27Dell+JR&amp;cauthor_id=27994091\">research<\/a> published in the New England Journal of Medicine and honored with numerous awards, including the ACR Silver Fork award and the AF Howley Prize.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>UNMC Department of Internal Medicine Lifetime Achievement Award in Research.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>James R. O\u2019Dell Endowed Professorship established in his name.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Under Dr. O\u2019Dell\u2019s leadership, the division grew from a total of three faculty members, including himself, to now more than 20 \u2013 many of whom are recognized as national leaders in the field.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cMy goal with all of my faculty members is to hire people who are better and brighter than I am, and I have succeeded,\u201d Dr. O\u2019Dell said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t have many talents,\u201d he said. \u201cBut one of my talents is recognizing talent and recruiting that talent.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Moreover, \u201cI\u2019m very proud of the fact that we\u2019ve never lost a faculty member,\u201d Dr. O\u2019Dell said. \u201cOur attrition rate is zero, with the exception of retirement.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Dr. O\u2019Dell said credit for his success as a leader and mentor can be traced back to his own mentors, including the late Dr. Michael Sorrell, and Drs. Lyn Klassen and James Armitage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cDean Bob Waldman,\u201d Dr. O\u2019Dell continued. \u201cHe was a spectacular person and visionary dean. He doesn\u2019t get enough credit.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Dr. O\u2019Dell was famously Dr. Sorrell\u2019s first chief resident. This experience helped spark Dr. O\u2019Dell\u2019s interest in a career in academic medicine. He said even as he was preparing to leave for a fellowship, Dr. Sorrell already was recruiting him to eventually return to UNMC.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Dr. O\u2019Dell later would follow this very model, working closely with residents and hand-picking them to become UNMC faculty. \u201cAmong the first two were Ted Mikuls (MD) and Amy Cannella (MD). And they have helped make us the division we are today.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Dr. O\u2019Dell praised Dr. Mikuls\u2019 leadership of clinical research like the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/intmed\/divisions\/rheum\/research\/vara.html\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Veterans' Affairs Rheumatoid Arthritis (VARA) Registry, opens in a new window\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Veterans&#8217; Affairs Rheumatoid Arthritis (VARA) Registry<\/a> and Dr. Cannella\u2019s founding and management of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/intmed\/divisions\/rheum\/fellowship\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"rheumatology fellowship program, opens in a new window\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">rheumatology fellowship program<\/a>. Drs. Cannella and Mikuls were recently <a href=\"https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/newsroom\/2025\/01\/03\/drs-mikuls-cannella-honored-by-american-college-of-rheumatology\/\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"honored by the American College of Rheumatology, opens in a new window\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">honored by the American College of Rheumatology<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Both were specifically chosen to carry out these roles \u2013 and more than rose to the occasion, Dr. O\u2019Dell said. They have embodied his leadership philosophy that, \u201cYou give every faculty member you hire something of their own that they can build and be proud of.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He continued: \u201cI can go right down the list and name something unique and special about every single faculty member, some program where each has taken ownership.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The success of the division?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s there because of them.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And it\u2019s there because of Dr. O\u2019Dell, who has empowered each of them by passing on the lessons he\u2019s learned from his own mentors:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Hire the right people.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Open doors for them; don\u2019t <em>de<\/em>motivate them.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Encourage them to grow their networks; give them yours and take advantage of theirs.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Give each of them something special of their own to take on and be responsible for.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Dr. O\u2019Dell acknowledged that not everyone is naturally confident or at ease using soft skills. \u201cPutting yourself out there,\u201d he said. \u201cApplying for this position, giving this big talk in front of an audience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cBut that\u2019s where, if someone shows confidence in them, that builds confidence.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It happened to him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt goes back to the people I was lucky enough to have as mentors or promoters in my career,\u201d he said. \u201cDr. Sorrell saw potential in me that I didn\u2019t see in myself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s when people like that who you look up to and admire have confidence and faith in you, it helps you to step up and say, \u2018Maybe I can do this.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He can step aside now, he said, because the people he has trained can do this.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe have young faculty members who are extremely capable,\u201d he said. \u201cDr. England is ready for this job. He has all of the skills to build on what we\u2019ve done.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Dr. O\u2019Dell already knows it will be hard on some days to sit on the sideline and watch.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cBut I\u2019ll get to see my \u2018kids\u2019 thrive,\u201d he said. \u201cAnd that\u2019s going to be really fun, too.\u201d<\/p>\n<div style=\"display: none;\"><a rel=\"nofollow\"
